I have some things that just don't come off of paint, be it a piece of a bug, bloodstains from running over deer (just kidding), or tar from the road.

I thought of using a clay bar.

Clay Barring works great when done properly. If you want to do the whole car correctly wash it with DAWN dishwashing liquid which will strip off all the old waxy build up. (Note: DONT use DAWN dishwashing liquid to wash your car on a regular basis, its not good for your polish and shine). Once you strip it down, then clay the whole car. Do this inside of a garage or out of direct sunlight and make sure you use plenty of the lubricating fluid. Then do a polish and or glaze after you wax. MAN it looks great!

I clay bar, it's great, but cancel your appointments in the afternoon. You have to really spend some time to do it right, and it's a pain, especially because you should do it as a part of a whole treatment as stated above.

+1 for clay, and the time it takes. It's worth it.

I guess I didn't do it right, because I was finished in about a half hour. I used a clay bar kit which I bought at an auto parts store. It was amazing how smooth the paint looked and felt afterwards. One guy who lives in the apartment complex saw my car parked out in the street along with other cars, and said WHY does your car look so good compared to the other cars. Nobody else's car shined the why mine did. It was the clay bar. The paint was like glass.

Claying is now part of my springtime car cleanup tradition. Now that I've used it on my car and numerous customer cars (I do detailing on the side) I would never be without it.

Here is the clay bar after a small section on an Audi A4 I detailed last summer. The paint felt like sandpaper and after I saw this, I realized why. Probably the worst I've ever had.

Anyone ever use a Clay Bar to detail your car?-img_2027.jpg
