On my 92 Toyota Tercel the black plastic protective sheath that covers the opening by the floor shifter was gradually cracking due to weathering and age. Today it cracked off and there is an open gap under and around the floor shifter mechanism. I put duct tape over it but what happens is when the shifter is moved the tape gets nudged by the shifter, though most of the opening is protected when the car is in park.
Would you recommend maybe steel wool or maybe that light foam sealing stuff they use to seal around windows to seal up the gap? or would the dealer or a mechanic be able to put a new sheath on?
Any ideas? Any danger to the shift mechanism with this open gap? You don't see daylight through the opening, just the metal shifter rod going into the floor of the car
You can get a new shifter boot for it. I've drivin cars with them missing before, and all is good unless you drop something down there and it gets stuck and you can't shift... haha. I was just careful not to drop stuff in there, but they should be cheap to replace as well.
what it's called, it's more like a plastic cover that is on the incline that the lever moves back and forth on. would wedging in foam window sealer in the gap work? if it fell in would it hurt the shifter? better than steel wool?
In any case, good grief, get the correct part and put it on. Stuff like this is cheap from the junkyard, if you don't want to pay for or can't find a new part.

Do you have any mechanical skills at all? If you do, you can most likely replace that yourself.
I don't know whether or not you'll be able to get a new part, but a salvage yard, or a U-Pull-It salvage yard might be a good place to look.
Basically, I'd say replace it with the right part, or just leave it completely alone.
