Not really. I have one that is almost 12 years old, one that is 8 and one is rather new. never had any kind of smell. And also never heard anyone complaining about it on toyotanation either.
It happens mostly (irrespective of car maker) when a/c drain is blocked for a while and water is there for some time. Then mold etc develops and you have some kind of smell. You can get rid of this by treating evaporator with a special kit that can be found online as well as at dealer's.
