I am looking to purchase a SUV or crossover for the purpose of hauling camping gear and an Akita for those quick weekend trips. I have looked at several SUV (i.e. Jeep Liberty, Hyundai Santa Fe and Ford Escape.) I know the Toyota and Hondas are better but I don't want to spend over $10K for one since it will be used primarily for weekend road trips but it must be dependable and low maintenance. Any good suggestion?

obviously at 10k you are looking at used.. Subarus (outback and forester) are always good choices.
the impreza will be too small for the akita.
