My 2007 Ford Excape has side airbags.

News, SUVs do better in report on fatalities.

Small cars continue to be the least safe on the road, but all vehicles and SUVs in particular are getting much safer. Those are among the conclusions of a report out Thursday from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Vehicle death rates overall are down 30% since the mid-1990s, thanks largely to improvements in car design and equipment, the insurance-industry-funded group says. IIHS, which does crash tests of new models, says changes to make vehicles more crashworthy are increasingly apparent in the real world. "This is a big improvement over time," says Anne McCartt, IIHS senior vice president for research.

Whatever....I'll still take my chances with a "Small" vehicle over an SUV any day!!! Most SUV's have ungainly handling and can't avoid accidents in the first place. That's where the rollovers come into the picture. SUVs provide a False sense of protection, if for no other reason, just because they are larger. It is INDEED a FALSE sense of protection. In defense of your Ford Escape, it is one of the few "SENSIBLE" SUVs out there. It is one of the best handling SUVs, and has excellent 'Crash Protection'. What Is strange, is that some of the most expensive SUVs offer the worst handling. braking, crash protection, mpg, dependability and resale value. Too me the vast majority of SUVs are worthless. I have NO use for them!!!

tell us how you really feel..

I've had small cars and SUVs both, and like both. Loved my Range Rover and it would still be with us if it could tow more than 7000 lbs.

Didn't handle badly at all and was quite comfy to drive.

BTW, twice as many cars roll over as SUVs annually, and in both cases, it's a bare fraction of a percent of the total automotive population. Rollover scares are just that, scares and can easily be avoided.

I do not think any of our cars have side air bags. Some of them do not have air bags at all.
