Yeah but a diesel engine will last longer than a gasoline one and the mpg are great.
What are the options for diesel cars in the US?
I know of VWs, but many others.

Audi A3 and Q7s, which, to me, are vastly over-priced ($40k and $50k). Likewise the BMW 335 (base $45k) and the Mercedes Benz 320 (base $65k)

I've been looking around at new and newer cars and decided to go to the VW dealer and look at Jettas. The article quoted in the first post said the premium for a diesel was about $2,400 - at the dealer I looked at, it was more like $8,000. A brand new Jetta was around $19,900 for a base model and the base model diesel (which was admittedly a higher level model than the base regular gas car) was $27,999. That may just be a local problem because we're not a big city, but that's too much price difference.

that must be because they have a big percentage of the diesel market over there.I certainly wouldn't pay that for a diesel Jetta-ridiculous.No wonder the other poster was saying 70,000 miles to get your money back.Price diff is nothing like that here.
The Official Website for Volkswagen UK : Volkswagen UK
Almost all cars over here are available in diesel now-I bought my first one last year and love it but not a VW- a Seat Leon FR.
I get 50mpg on Hwy at 70mph.

I think they are hard to come by in many places. I just did a quick search and have only found one near me. It is going for about 25,500. There are more in S. Florida from 23,500 to about 28,500.
