Then you clearly have never driven on the Autobahn.
And I thought only my wifey knows me better than I do.

The OP never said that we had to limit our choices to affordable sports cars if he had, I would have to list my Subaru Outback wagon and put a racing stripe on it.
Not sure if there are many over there, but i'd suggest a Honda S2000. Maybe not the 1st year as some seemed to have trans/rear troubles. But overall it's been a well rated sports car, with some pretty decent performance stock. And judging by the #'s my daughter's BF just got on his new turbo set up ( 445 hp, near 300 #'s tq ) on only 12 psi and on e85, that car could really be a little burner with some $$ invested. That small of a car with some added hp and suspension mods, and you would surprise a lot of other drivers ( plus probably scare the crap out of yourself ).
just a thought.

My top ten list was purely a word of fantasy.
ZipZap is the OP, and it seemed pretty clear to me that affordability was part of his decisionmaking process.
If affordable used sports car is what he needs then here's some to consider. How about an Escort GT. Oooh those babies could really move. Then there's the blisteringly fast Turbo powered Chevy Sprint. Vroom vrooom. And didn't they also have a Chevy Chevette SS? Bet that thing was a beauty. I'd love to see a Dodge Omni GLH flying down the Autobahn (truthfully, it was a serious performance hatchback in it's day).
Had you considered some of the older model Nissan/Datsun sports cars? 240Z, 280Z, 300Z, 350Z, or the current 370Z? Those would be in your price range and the older models have a classic sports car look. I don't care for the look of the Mazda RX-8 but they do say it's one of the best handling sports cars around though it's lacking in the torque dept.
Hard to argue against a 370Z if you can swing it. If not, a used 350Z would be a good stand-in. I happen to think it's ugly as hell though. Otherwise, maybe a twin turbo 300ZX or maybe a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 (sold in Europe as the GTO I think??).

Thanks Drover for jumping in...
Plus some very good new suggestions over here, let's summarise:
Honda S2000 - Been driving one some 10yrs ago. Great car with an amazing engine. However it seems rather small (I am 1,86meters tall) being more of SLK, Boxster level size. And I don't know if the soft-top will be enjoyable at higher speeds. Nissan 350Z - Drover, you hit the nail on the head... I think it is a great, but fugly car. Nissan 300ZX - Now that is a car of my taste. I have read somewhere that it is not very reliable and costs a fortune to maintain though. Anyone with more info on that one? Mitsubishi 3000GT - Was not on my radar up to now, is it not the same as the Dodge Stealth? There are some of them around here at a bargain. More info on build and driving quality would be appreciated ... Interesting one.

I would strongly consider holding off a bit until you can afford the C6 corvette. They are GREAT cars and with the US economy down can be picked up pretty cheaply. (I practically stole my Z06 last year) I seriously doubt you will see many of those driving around Europe while they are not rare here in the US.
Check out some used prices for C6 and see if holding off a year might be worth it.
P.S. The C6 is a great looking car, VERY cheap for the performance etc. Many US people don't appreciate them because they are pretty common around here.
You're probably best sticking with your original two ideas over the others in the range (and some that can be had for less.) I would imagine the Vette and the NSX are real head turners over there, even among "car people."
