I lost a spare key to my car and I fear someone might have stolen it. I probably have $1500 worth of stereo equipment in my car. I want the 2 door locks rekeyed and I also want the trunk rekeyed so no one can get access to my subs. I don't need the ignition rekeyed. They also didn't get my remote unlock so I don't need that changed. Does anyone have an idea of how much this would cost? Can the locksmith rekey the locks while they are still in my car? Approx. how long would it take for them to rekey the locks?

Thanks so much

Any hope of putting the car in a garage for the short term?

Would need to know what kind of car, etc. Any decent locksmith could give you a quote, this should not be a big job really.

Some cars you can order a set of door/trunk locks and keys.

Typical this can be done in a couple of hours.

Really, though, ask a local locksmith, since you didn't fill out your location all I can say is it would cost less in small town Alabama than in New York City.

Super short term maybe take your subs out of the car and put in your home.

Many cars have the new encripted keys like all later model fords. If you lose a key and only have one a locksmith cant make you another key because it takes 2 keys to program a new chip for the additional key. If you want to change the locks you have an expensive problem because the locks are also encripted to match the keys..The cost for just another key if you have only one means several hours at A DEALER (LOCKSMITHS DONT HAVE THE COMPUTER EQUIPEMENT TO RESET THE CARS COMPUTER) AND THE COST IS APROX 150/200 BUCKS JUST FOR ANOTHER KEY. Ive checked.

If a chip is involved think $100 to $150

^^^Might be more than that, lock cylinders will have to be removed from doors/trunk and the tumblers reset to the new key, then key cut. Lots of labor there.

Call your insurance agent and ask if your equipment is covered. Hopefully you have receipts or can get them. Take some pictures of the equipment, model/serial numbers if you can get at them.

The chip in the key is generally only for the ignition. Only a few vehicles have chip recognition in the door locks.

Getting a key to open the door will cost about $50 - $500 depending on whom you call. However if the vehicle is newer than roughly 2003, a locksmith will not be able to make a key to start the vehicle.

Usually, the dealership can order a new key for your vehicle using the vehicle identification number (VIN). They charge $100 to $300.

To rekey my old 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero I was quoted $2500 for the Twice module, transievers and locks.

Also the $2500 is just for parts from an aftermarket source. The price would have been closer to $3200 for just the Twice module and $600 per transiever from the Saab dealer.

My local locksmith can absolutely program a transponder key. Did it for my sons Jeep.
