Car Stereo Remotes - Why Have Them? (car radio, SUV, truck)

That's my question - maybe I need to get out more, but when I am listening to the sound system of a car, I am at least sitting in the driver's seat, almost always driving rather than just sitting - so the head unit is more or less right there, easy to reach. So what's the remote for then? So you can give a back-seat driver control of the stereo, so they will have something to do and so leave you drive in peace?
Do the makers include them simply because "they can"?
Any way I agree with you. When I put an Alpine unit in my 92 Accord I was like what is the remote for--back seat passengers? I never used it once. If I tried I would hit the Alpine stereo before I can even use the remote.
I use mine when I am out fishing or camping. I dont have to walk back to the truck to change crap. I dont use it when I am in the truck though that is just stupid.
Well if you had the controls on the steering wheel then you wouldnt need the remote. But what car radio company is going to give us either a new steering wheel or controls that fit onto the steering wheel?

well partyl because people have large sound systems and want to be able to control tehm outside of their car, like at pregame parties. also its somewhat less awkward to reach over to control stereo while driving

If I have a shirt pocket, I keep mine in there so I don't have to look down at the head unit or reach toward it to change something. Once you memorize the remote's button layout (which is almost always more ergonomically sound than the button layout on the head unit anyway), it's a lot easier to change your stereo settings without taking your eyes off the road. For me the only issue is that unless I have a shirt pocket I don't really have a convenient place to put the remote.
Anyone that has ever owned a GM G body car built before 1988 (Cutlass, Monte, Regal, Grand prix) knows how you have to stretch over to mess with the radio; having the remote there alleviates this problem.
