Run it hard so it isn't a slow slug! This is more important on a diesel than a gas engine. I brake mine in pulling a loaded trailer (at least 8000lbs)about 80-85 mph west from Missouri. Why? because the 2 I didn't never ran up to par.

Yeah, laugh at those automotive engineers, most of whom have earned advanced degrees from institutions that would probably take your application and feed it to a goat. Let's see how much better you do in today's regulatory environment, which has changed tremendously since your rattling crapbox of an Escort was designed nearly 3 decades ago.

And you're flat-out nuts if you think your 50hp Escort diesel was anywhere near as quick as a modern hybrid.

Actuly, I still had it when the slugs from toyota came out. They never did keep up! No, I'd much rather have my escort. And to think at the time I didn't even like the escort!!!

I'm calling BS. If they didn't "keep up" it's because they weren't trying to race you. If they were, your diesel Escort would never see any part of a contemporary hybrid but the back end.

Here's a race for you.
East coast to west coast. Prius vs Jetta TDI. $130.00 for fuel. First to the finish line is the winner. I can guarantee it won't be the Toyota.

You are from the city of the idiot in the whitehouse. No wonder you don't want to believe what did really happen.

Does anyone make a compact pickup diesel? Older would be preferable, but I would consider a modern one if available. Chevy Luv is the last one I can think of. Not too many of those left. I'd love to have a small p/up with a 4 cyl diesel.

Maybe I'll have to swap one in. What would be a suitable small diesel engine to swap into a small truck?

Mitsubishi and Isuzu, and Datsun all made diesel compact trucks in that vintage. (as well as Ford Ranger). Parts are tough to find, but I saw a later model Diesel LUV FS for $800 a few weeks ago.

I've seen several transplants of Cummins 4BT into smaller trucks / jeeps.

There are kits for putting a VW Diesel into a Samurai.

Being the owner of over 30 VW-D's I would recommend the Cummins for a truck (I have a few 6BTs in Dodges) Tranny and gearing is a big issue, especially with 4x4, (diesel RPM ~2500 while gas is 3500-4000) maybe you could use an overdrive, and I've heard of folks marrying transfer cases to step up ratios (one running forward, one backwards). Tall tires will help too.

50 mpg since 1976, Where have you been? (no OPEC / dinosaurs required )

BTW... doing a road trip with a VW diesel and a Prius is absolutely no contest, we do it with cross state school events. NO ONE wants to bring the Prius, constantly stopping for fuel. My 52 mpg Diesel Passat will go 1000 miles between fuel stops, EZ !! 25 gal tank). (I don't bring any riders with small bladders). I haven't seen any Prius' with 500,000 miles, but there must be some with over 200k. Would like to see the Maintenance expenses of a Hybrid @ 500,000 miles. It does cost diesel drivers a few $12 timing belts, and fresh fuel and air filter annually. I had to buy a $47 battery at 300k (That's more than I paid for each of my 50 mpg Rabbits )

$12 for a timing belt? For those that don't DYI it's closer to $800.00, but you only have to do it every 80k to 100k miles.
I wish my 2005 passat wagon got 52mpg. I doubt it will ever get to 40mpg. My Jetta would get 48mpg @ 80mph, but this 2.0 liter and automatic in the passat uses more fuel.

Interesting non sequitur. But you don't have to be from any particular place to know that a 50hp diesel Escort would get smoked by a modern hybrid with over twice the horsepower. Even a petrol-powered Escort from that era would get hammered by today's hybrids.
