And, one that I have thought about. (not that I could afford either)
I love the 'resto-rods' or whatever you want to call them, but I would never want someone to build one out of a rare classic. The classic shell with modern handling, reliability, etc. would be my choice if I could actually afford to drive it a bunch. But, given the choice of say, a bone stock original rare muscle car and a similar 'clone' with modern mechanicals, I would probably opt for the original.
I like the 383 Camaro, but no way would I go with a slushbox. I'd put in a modern 6-speed, *but*, I'd keep the original 4-speed shifter ball and the "stick" itself.
I would be OK with certain bolt-on tasteful upgrades, partly for practicality and partly for improved performance.
In dead-stock trim, the late 60's muscle cars are really set up to run on leaded premium, you will have to blend your own, or buy outright race gas. You will become expert at blending fuels, rebuilding engines, particularly valve grinds, or, probably, both, if you run one much "as God intended".
Dead stock they are set up for best 1/4 mile times, and frankly they suck at freeway cruising - hello bigtime engine roar, hello again Mr. Gas Pump, hello 4000 RPM with a 5000 RPM redline at 80 MPH. No thanks. Might work for a downtown Johnny, but out in the open west I want a taller gear available for the long drags between No and Where out here. The '68 GTO came with drums all round because the disc brakes of the day would drag a little and worsen your ET.
Yeah, I care about ET but it ain't all I care about.
My MG-B has a few bolt-on mods that take it a bit away from stock, but are easily returned to OEM if the next owner wants to be that anal. For example a thermostatically controlled set of steel-braid hoses to the oil cooler, dead stock the oil cooler is "on" all the way 24-7, and probably does more harm than good for anyone who is not driving it like he stole it in Death Valley in summer.
There are some killer deals out there. I'm really starting to like the "Pro touring" thing. Turbos are the way to go if you still want to go fast and be able to drive the car. I'm sure this car as well over $40k into it so the "buy it now" price really isn't that bad.
