Five killed, 10 critically injured when minivan crashes in Louisiana - CNN.com
Large van, 15 people including children, driver and four children dead, others seriously injured, only the driver and the passenger had seatbelts, children were thrown all over the road. Article said there wasn't enough seat belts for all the children. Then get another vehicle! And why weren't they in proper child safety seats? Judging by the photo of the van, the driver died because when the van rolled, it crushed that part of the roof.

It depends on who "they" is. Unfortunately, this is far too common. In NM it seems to happen about once a year. It is often immigrant families from Mexico or a large van full of illegals. How do you legislate seatbelt laws to a group already breaking the law? There was an accident last year and one of the survivors said it was very common in Mexico to travel that way. We are dealing with cultural and socio-economic issues as much as anything. It always seems to be poor familes that die like this.

Other than education, nothing else can really be done at this point. It is tragic.

Not surprising, stupid behavior like this often leads to gruesome results. Sometimes it takes death and destruction for people to finally get the message.

I agree, SailorDave . . . an easily prevented tragedy.

This type of tragedy is repeated in Southern Arizona on a regular basis mostly by illegals, many running from Border Patrol Agents. Not only no seat belts, usually the vans are "over capacity" and have unsafe (read worn and old) tires as well.

Another ridiculous disregard for the other drivers on our highways are the idiots who ride in the bed of an open pick-up.

Unfortunately, these goons usually kill or seriously injure innocent victims.

Darwinian selection

But there are a lot of celebutards who drive SUVs without wearing seatbelts, sometimes DUI...and SUVs are prone to roll in any emergent maneuver....with risk of roof crumpling and paralysis/death in rollover

Didn't a famous trial lawyer in Houston recently die not wearing a seatbelt in a big ole SUV vs tree?

Dumb people do dumb things and often don't realize driving is one's riskiest daily activity...and a big, dumb SUV (or any car) won't protect a dumb driver from his or others' stupidity in every scenario

I wonder what the families/friends of people who were killed while actually wearing seatbelts might say about your statement? So a drunk idiot with no control who crashes into and kills an innocent family of people obeying the law is "Darwinian selection", too?

Another instance of people who have children and no clue how to care for them.

And just for the record, it is sad when ANYONE is killed *not* just children.

In addition to being a common-sense plea for the use of seat belts, can we also mention the importance of making sure that tires are in good condition and properly inflated? Obviously, if a "tire blew out" then they were not in very good condition and should have been replaced.

Idiots.

They could have been brand new tires and blown if they were overloaded.
