I keep telling people that if Volkswagen would put the classic Karmann Ghia body on the new Beetle they wouldn't be able to keep it in the showrooms. How cool would that car be?
Why not the VR6 motor from the old Corrado? A Ghia that would actually have performance to match it's looks?
If they'd make it in a droptop, I'd be near the front of the line at the VW dealer.
For high performance applications, VW is replacing the VR6 with a direct-injection turbo 4. More horsepower, more torque, better fuel economy and lower emissions -- win/win/win/win. Even their base turbo 4 (at least what serves as the base turbo 4 in the North American market) now has more horsepower than the original Corrado VR6 did.
Audi TT
The coupe has 4 seats available, 2.0 T engine, automatic S-Tronic transmission with Quattro all-wheel-drive system performing 272 horsepower on 258 pound-feet of torque. The car will make use of inline-4 turbo for the TTS coupe and roadster, adding power while reducing its weight. Audi claims that the Audi TT will be capable of going from 0 to 60 mph in only around 5 seconds.http://www.easydreamcars.com/cars/Audi-TT-Coupe.jpg (broken link)
Again, we get the shaft from the Japanese and Europeans by not getting their good stuff. We either never get the good stuff, or get it later than everyone else.
Look at the amount of Lancer Evolutions (Evos I though VII) we missed out on. (Not counting WRXs, RWD Turbo Sedans from Toyota/Lexus, etc).

Thanks for posting that Civic Hatchback pic. Why is that not here in the states?
