When dealerships don't sell all of the current model cars they have on their lots, what happens to them? If a person decided to buy a new car in May 2010, but they wanted a 2009 model (maybe the 2010 model received a complete overhaul and now has bugs that need to be worked out), are those cars still on some car lot somewhere? The cars are not used; they are new, but not the current model year.
Yes, they are still on the lot, plenty of dealers have plenty of leftovers. Before I left the dealership i was at, i sold a brand new 2007 dodge ram 3500 (it was sept of 09 when I sold it..)

as they are paying interest on the floorplan.
Someone gets a good deal on them. And the warantee starts the day you actually bought it, so you are good to go. When you go to sell it however, its worth less as well, so you have to get a good deal on it if you plan on selling it soonish. For keeping it, they can be good buys, provided its not a model change year.
Okay, thanks everyone!! About three years ago, I asked this question on a non-car forum and was told the cars were sent to auction. I didn't know any differently and just accepted the answer. However, with reading this forum fairly frequently, I have never read any posts about folks buying new cars that were last year's model from auctions, so I thought I would ask. Thank you!

They sell them at a loss to customers or they send them off to Mannheim.
It is expensive to hold onto all that inventory.
i bought a 2008 Mazdaspeed3 in April 2009 shortly before the 2010 models were about to be released for 5k under MSRP
