I think that speed limits should be raised I mean a 10 MPH increase on freeways would be good because even small sub-compacts can reach speeds alot higher than the speed limit with ease so a small speed increase is nothing I put speeding in a grey area it depends on how much we are talking about if it like 5-6 miles over then it is not really bad but if you are driving at dangerous reckless speeds then yeah they should be punished

And do you actually think that by increasing the speed to 80 mph the other drivers on the road would stick with 80 mph? No they would not. If they already drive more than ten mph above the posted speed limit then they'll do the same at 80 mph. This isn't about what a car is capable of doing. This is about the safest speed for a combination of vehicle capability (not all vehicles are capable of safe driving at 80 or more mph), driver's skill, and road conditions. Some people here are moaning and groaning about a max speed limit of 70 mph. You'd better be happy with 70 mph because if enviromentalist had their way it would go back down to 55mph and don't think Obama and Pelosi won't make the change.

An income based fine system would be a nightmare to administer, and probably not worth the effort on that account, even forgetting philosophical considerations.

Still, it is true that for a high earner, the fines we have now are pretty nominal.

We all react to the types and levels of punishment differently. Personally, I'd rather pay a relatively hefty fine than have to give up a large block of my time to do community service, or spend all day in some driving class. So those two things would be the most effective punishment for me. I like to drive fast, and don't mind an occasional fine, but I know others who hate the idea. We're all different, even when accounting for income levels.

The same applies to prison terms. Some people would die if they had to spend a night in jail, while for others, a 5-year prison term is no big deal. It's very hard to really equalize punishment in terms of the effect the punishment has on the individual.

I don't really think that's true. I drive the speed I'm comfortable with, regardless of speed limit. On the highway, under the right conditions, I'm an 80 mph guy. That's just the speed I settle on if traffic is light and the road is dry. Around me, the speed limit is 55 mph, and I do 80 mph. When I go down south and the speed limit is 70 mph, I still do 80 mph. And down there, I'm more inclined to slow down if the speed limit is lower, since I think there must be a reason for the lower speed limit.
