Debating between buying a Chevrolet camaro and a Dodge Challenger. Since both are priced in the same range (approx $22,500), are there any other expenses which might vary greatly between these two cars? Need to decide soon, so any help will be appreciated.
Are you buying the top of the line camaro? Wow a Dodge Challenger is $23K? They make a watered down version of it? What is it you're after the most? Horsepower, gas mileage, etc.
The OP must want the base version of each vehicle so what it comes down to is personal preference. The Challenger bases at $23K and change and has a 3.5 V6 producing 250 hp. The Camaro rings in about $1K less than the Challenger and comes with a 3.6L V6 producing 312 hp. The Camaro is also lighter and will smoke the base Challenger in any red-light challenge but I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Most of the reviews that I have read prefer the Camaro and Mustang to the Challenger. The Challengers feel much bigger than the other two, and are seen by many drivers as more of a road trip car than a true drivers car:
"In a nutshell, the Challenger R/T is just too big and soft to hang with Mustang and Camaro when the road gets kinky; it's a Clydesdale compared with the two Thoroughbreds. The scales bear this out: The Challenger R/T presses down on the earth with 4154 lb, 295 more than the Camaro SS and a massive 582 more than the Mustang GT. Uncle Isaac Newton decrees there's simply no way this pony can gavotte like its rivals."

The Camaro and Mustang will be more fun on twists and turns, but maybe a bit less comfortable on long trips. Of course there is the "which one looks better" argument, which is really based only on your personal tastes.
The 300 HP V6's being offered by Camaro and Mustang also make them popular choices.
I'd say you just need to drive both, and determine which you like better. The long term costs are going to be fairly equal between the two. Having narrowed it to these two cars already, you just need to make up your mind on which you prefer.
The 3.5L in the base Challenger is adequate for every day driving, but obviously lags behind the Camaro & Mustang in the performance arena due to it's lower HP and higher weight, the mustang is the leader here. For $300 a custom computer tuner wakes up the 3.5 nicely and improves the automatics sluggish shifting performance, but not enough to compete with the Chevy and the Ford.
Compating base models, I'd say you have to go with the Camaro if you are simply after the performance and styling. With that said, the Challenger is far and away a better everyday then the other two. It has a nice compliant suspension and ample interior room. I would personally buy the Camaro, but it really comes down to what you need/want the car to do.
From what I remember seeing, it sounds like the Pentastar V6 will be replacing the 3.5L currently in the Challenger for the 2011 MY. So if the OP can wait until later this fall, or whenever the 2011 MY cars will hit dealers, they may be able to get the upgraded V6 which will cut down the power deficit compared to the Camaro.

yeah or get a really good deal on a V6 challenger with the old 3.5 HO when the Pentastar comes out. dodge will pretty much be giving away the old models sitting on the lot with major discounts.
as for used version the challenger has been out for over 3 years so be carful because some will almost be out of factory warranty and if something goes wrong you could be SOL.
have you checked out the chargers? they are giving them away also even the loaded charger R/T with the hem is going for the price of a base challenger V6 and out local dealer will even throw in in a '16 foot power boat and trailer if you a charger SE/RT and dodge ram 1500 or dodge nitro suv
