Hmmmm, I get the feeling this one will run and run !!

If we're talking about standard cars, straight off the forecourt, then in my experience, it's quite close between the 80's Golf GTi, and the Ford Focus.

I'd also put the ITR at the top of my list. I'm betting the Cobalt SS is somewhere on that list but the ITR is the superior car.

I always hated the way that VW's would lift one rear wheel when pushed in the turns. Not my vote.

I think the Honda Prelude would turn faster laps with less sweat every time.

I had an Alfasud TI in around 1981 which handled better than any car I have had since.

Probably Integra Type-R DC5 or the new Ford Focus RS.

I belive the cobalt SS turbo was one the fastest production FWD car's around the legendary Nürburgring circuit.

As others have said, Integra Type-R, the performance Focus' and the Cobalt SS. All were pretty damn good handlers for FWD cars right off the show room. The dark horse candidate would have to be the Dodge Neon. Modified Neon's were incredibly competitive in SCCA racing and would win the crown if we considered actual race cars.

This is true but the old VW Golf/Scirocco platform is a good handler at less than "11/10ths". For some reason they are very communicative to me anyway in slick going like snow.

To me, the only thing I don't like about Honda FWD cars (which is almost all Honda outside of the NSX) is that at least to me the steering is completely numb, almost like a video game steering wheel - in contrast to the VW which is not as good as BMW cars, but it's better than I would expect for FWD.

Many people thought that the Ford Puma was a very good handling FWD car.

Here's a daft clip of it-
