Hele on!

That was my initial assignment, back when the 125th Signal Battalion was the only unit out there. We used to do PT runs through the pineapple fields and you could NEVER get those volcanic mud stains out of your PT clothes, no matter how much bleach you used. At least the stains were Signal Corps orange, though.

Thankfully, it was part of a round-the-world ticket in business class, and LAN has nice lie-flat seats in their long haul jets. I've done enough long haul coach between the US and Europe to know that 13 1/2 hours crammed into a coach seat would have been both mind and butt numbing!
Almost 6700 miles. I wonder when the first S America to europe flights began

My favorite long haul fight was on Continental when I made the Houston to Singapore jaunt regularly. They routed us through Narita each way. The leg between HRT and Singapore was not flown by Continental.

The return flight to Houston from NRT was my favorite leg. I do not recall the miles but we left NRT around 4pm their time and arrived in Houston at 2 or 3pm the same day due to date line of course. The part of that flight I enjoyed most was after crossing the pacific at night, you approached the west coast at high altitude (38k or so) as the sun rose. In something like 2 and a half hours you landed in Houston after seeing the sun come up over the West Coast and Sierra Nevada's. I think it was around 11 hours elapsed time this direction vs almost 14 hours against the jet stream the other direction.

I'm not sure, but over the past few years there have been some very interesting developments regarding South America direct flight destinations and southern hemisphere travel.

At least two European carriers directly serve Chile, avoiding stopovers in the US. A few more serve Brazil. Both Qantas and LAN have flights between Australia and South America, and both Emirates and Qatar Airways fly into Brazil as well as Argentina (I'm not certain if these are direct flights or if they have a stop in between).

These are the longest flights for each of the European airlines
7,240 Air France AF406 Paris to Santiago de Chile
6,647 Iberia IB6831 Madrid to Santiago de Chile
7,132 Lufthansa LH510 Frankfurt to Buenos Aires
7,107 KLM KL707 Amsterdam to Buenos Aires
6,904 British Airways BA245 London to Buenos Aires
6,919 Alitalia AZ680 Rome to Buenos Aires
6,252 Air Europa UX41 Madrid to Buenos Aires

6,406 Swiss International Air Lines LX 179 Singapore to Zurich

I believe that Sydney is out of the reach of any Euopean airport, so the airlines longest flight is usually South America.

Dubai and Hong Kong are both terminii of 6 of the 30 longest haul flights in the world.

Well the LAX SIN flight stops flying in four days. But American is jumping into the fray with a DFW to HKG flight that will be a few miles longer than United's EWR to HKG.

Qatar & Emirates both serve Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires in South America. Not sure if there's a fuel stop in Rome or anywhere else in Europe on those trips.

Dubai-São Paulo Emirates EK 261 is 7,592 miles, 14 hr 55 min, on a Boeing 777-200LR and began on 1 October 2007 non stop.

IMHO, the 7,488 mile flight from LAX to Sydney is the real break point in long haul flights. It is undertaken by four different airlines (Delta, United, Qantas, Virgin Australia) and by four different jets
Boeing 777-200LR
Boeing 777-300ER
Boeing 747-400
Airbus A380-800

The Dreamliner has an Operating empty weight of only 259,500 lb significantly below the 353,800 lb of the 777-300 and 394,100 lb of the 747-400. I think it will eventually be used on these long haul runs.

In April 1976 Pan Am set a new record for longest non-stop scheduled flight with its 10,854-km New York–Tokyo route and in December the airline set another record with Sydney–San Francisco, covering 11,937 km.

So in almost four decades since then these are the only flights over 12,500 km flown by USA airlines
  1. 13,593 km San Francisco - Singapore : United Airlines (1 June 2016)
  2. 13,582 km Atlanta - Johannesburg : Delta Air Lines (3 June 2009)
  3. 13,072 km Dallas/Fort Worth - Hong Kong : American Airlines (11 June 2014)
  4. 12,980 km Newark - Hong Kong : United Airline (1 March 2001)
  5. 12,748 km Los Angeles -Melbourne : United Airlines ( 26 October 2014)
  6. 12,565 km Newark- Mumbai: United Airlines (1 October 2007)
  7. 12,543 km Chicago-O'Hare - Hong Kong: United Airlines (15 June 1996)

I think the historical record supports your theory. Ultra long flights are very expensive propositions mostly because you are expending so much fuel to simply carry fuel. In the 1970's it was possible to connect the East Coast with Asia, and the West Coast with Australia. Advancement above those core connections is relatively slow.

Even today British Airways' longest flight is London-Heathrow to Buenos Aires-Ezeiza (11,111 km). They certainly expect to finally fly to Sydney nonstop in the next 5-7 years, but other than that there is very little interest in setting new long distance records.

But a lot of foreign airlines have very specific reasons for pushing ultra long distance flights. The two current longest are:

14,203 km Auckland -Dubai : Emirates
13,804 km Dallas/Fort Worth - Sydney :Qantas

How do you determine the flight miles on potential routes not currently flown? I use to fly Houston to Singapore a number of times and would love to have avoided the Tokyo stop. The short leg of Tokyo to Singapore is similar to the trip from Houston to London and made it feel short haul by comparison to the Tokyo leg.
