Listening to press conference in Australia, they heard the pings again last night (that's today for us). Same ping heard on two different sweeps, indicating they were only picking up one box now. The signal was also weaker. Anywho, this makes a total of four times they have now picked up signals. Sounds like they are zeroing in, great news.
There are underwater robots that can search as long as they know the general area but, as everyone keeps saying, it's like finding a needle in a haystack.
I like this description better:
"We're trying to find the farm that the haystack is on..."
Since it seems they've narrowed down the location quite a bit, I wonder if they can go back and look at satellite pictures from the day the plane disappeared and see if there was a debris field there? Maybe they could kind of follow it/track it through subsequent pictures and see where some of the debris might be now.
I bet they have. They are pretty sure of it's location, just didn't get lucky. They know something they aren't disclosing. I suppose the half ping was their big break but there has to be more.
I'm guessing that someone has satellite photos at 7am on March 8th showing the plane flying in this area before crashing.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't know how that works. Does the film roll over and restart after a certain amount of time? Does anybody save all those images? They had a Cat 5 storm go through that area a couple of weeks ago, I imagine most of the wreckage sunk.
That is strange that there is no debris if they are close to the wreckage. True, it could have sunk in the storm. Or it could have drifted (and we hope someone has photos of that area on the day it might have crashed.) Or, if it truly was a deliberate act, someone might have landed it Sully style and it would have just sunk--if that's possible in the rough ocean waves.
But it just seems that there would be some sort of debris. Bodies, luggage, parts of the plane--something floating. At least it's exciting that they have heard some more pings. I have confidence that it will be found--don't know how soon but it will be found.

There was a description yesterday on how a plane on autopilot, which runs out of fuel, would crash. It would be a pretty violent crash. Upside down and cartwheel into the water. It would disintegrate.
I love how CNN keeps showing the Chinese raft with their handheld pinger detector and earbud headphones. LOL!
