Only flew in a 747 for one round trip - Austin, Texas to London in 2018. Quite a memorable experience after having flown on C-47s (Taipei to Hong Kong’s Kai Tak) and Lockheed Constellations in the 1950s.

Only flew on the upper deck once. The shortest 747 flight I took was ORD to MSP - little over 1 hr reposition flight, there were somewhere around 20 passengers on board.

I made many 747 flights, mostly on Northwest, some Pan Am. They were my favorite flights.

We have cargo 747's fly into our airport almost daily belonging to Atlas Airlines. They're coming in most times from Singapore to Anchorage to Huntsville. They'll offload cargo in 2-3 hours and be off to Europe--mostly Brussels.

Sometimes there will be 2-3 of them here in the middle of the night. Although I live on the glide path of the airport, I don't see them.

I often wonder what cargo those big birds are flying here--The Rocket City. Missiles? Helicopters? Armaments? Rocket parts? There's just no telling.

Three years ago I flew to Europe on a KLM 747, in the upper deck first class cabin. Very nice, just like your own little world up there. That said, there was a woman near by who had a bad cough, who never covered her mouth, and kept it up the whole flight.

NASA still flies a 747 (an SP no less!) for scientific research. I worked on that project for many years. Never flew on it though.

Sort of a sad bit of irony that it was B-747 that helped mark end of Pan Am...

IIRC between deregulation (which exposed their lack of domestic routes among other things), and rising fuel prices flying those big and beautiful birds became an Achilles heel for Pan Am.
I would add Lockerbie as a major reason as well.

Qantas is retiring their fleet as well. Did a lot of SYD-LAX flights in the late 90’s and early 2000s.

One of he best flight I ever had was Boston to Shannon Ireland on an Aer Lingus 747. I had cashed in my mileage so my wife and I were going 1st class. The 1st class cabin was up a round staircase, in the front of the aircraft, above tourist class. There were only 4 of us (two couples) in 1st class. Flight attendant said she was going to have the other attendant go help out in tourist and she would be taking care of us. She asked what we wanted. We all said a few drink, then dinner, then sleep. She said fine, no problem. Will do as you want. After dinner, I gathered pillows and blankets and made a bed in the aisle at the rear of the cabin. We slept well. She awoke us 1/2 hour out of Shannon for breakfast. Awesome flight.

A couple of years ago my wife and I flew a 747 from NY to Tel aviv round trip. It was the best flight we ever experienced, hardly felt any turbulence the whole flight.

Stick A Fork In It, It's Done, Boeing Ends 747 Production

That's like saying the United States is "done" because all the people who originally founded it, are dead and gone now.
