WASHINGTON (AP) - High-performance homemade planes like the one that killed a beach jogger last week in South Carolina are prone to stall, especially when going slower while waiting to land, and have been involved in a disproportionately large number of fatal accidents, federal officials warned Thursday.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a safety advisory to pilots that the Lancair, which is built from kits, and others like it have design characteristics that allow the planes to fly much faster than most small planes.

I've flown quite a few different planes in my years and haven't found one yet that's not "prone to stall" when flying at stall speed. The Lancair IVP (http://www.lancair.com/Main/iv_ivp.html - broken link) is an extremely high performance aircraft and operates at altitudes and speeds normally reserved for business jets, etc. It's stall speed is also high, so yeah, it demands skilled piloting.

I'm a 2000-hour (mid time) commercial pilot with single and twin ratings and have logged most of my hours in complex (high performance) aircraft, but I've never flown one THAT fast! I imagine that's the main problem with those high performance planes -- they demand more piloting skill than what the pilot who built them brings to the cockpit.

Then too, keep in mind that these are, by definition, EXPERIMENTAL aircraft. A good friend of mine built a beautiful plane -- basically his own design from tip to tail. He was a brilliant designer and an excellent builder, but the plane suffered two hard landings during it's first year of flying -- the first because the pilot wasn't qualified for a slick plane like it was, the second due to a design flaw in the retractible landing gear. Both accidents were commonplace for high performance homebuilt aircraft -- design/building flaws and unqualified pilots.

How long have you been selling airplanes? I would think airplane sales are down right now except maybe for light sport planes.

What a stupid pointless article. It doesn't say anything useful. Planes stall when they go below a certain speed. Kit planes and plans-built planes are no different than spam cans (mass produced planes).
