I almost posted this link (from another source) in the Detroit thread, but decided better.

Initially, I was really snarky (what... we need a person to teach Baltimore that junkfood is bad!!?!?!), and then I remembered what it was like living in Detroit after the last grocery store shut down. I was living on canned goods I would fly in w/ me from Dallas. No produce, no meat, nothing.. even the canned goods and boxes were expired.

The only stores were identical to the one in the picture. Limes.. like stones they were so old. The one in my building got shut down b/c they caught the guy shutting off the freezers at night to save money. Of course, that was after a lot of us got really sick. The situation was so bad in Detroit that there was a news conference. The grocers all said the same thing, "We can't operate with any margin b/c of the theft."

How do you argue w/ that? Are they scapegoating? How do you encourage a business to go to an area where it (is perceived to have) a very good chance to fail?

So sad

Visit the Great Kids Farm in Catonsville (on city-owned land) or the Real Food Farm in Clifton Park if you want to see an example of Geraci's legacy. Kids raising food from seed then bringing it to market and to the table.

I've volunteered at both and spoken with kids who say that the school lunch situation was abysmal but getting better. We need to give kids a chance, not heart disease.
