My daughter is thinking about attending the University of Baltimore for criminal justice. Everything that I know about Baltimore is that it is dangerous. I am nervous about her attending a school in the city. Can anyone tell me anything different about this area? We are going to the open house in April.

The area south of the school is a nice bubble. It's one of the better, more accessible places in Baltimore that suburban people visit on the weekends. As long as your daughter lives south of Mt Royal Ave there'd be no reason to worry. Points north are slightly hairy but still not third-world.

I went to law school at UB and my wife lived by herself in Bolton Hill before we got married. The area is generally fine (it's still the city) and I've never once felt uncomfortable walking around there at any time of day. Plenty of security patrolling given that UB and MICA are so close to each other. Not to mention with the contruction of the new law school building, coming improvements to Penn Station and the resurgence of the Station North area, it should only get better.

I've been attending taking for a bout a year. I only go to classes two, or three times a week(maybe more if there is an activity). I live in county as do many students. It's a commuter school.
I like the area. I haven't personally had a issue in the area yet. Lot of little shops, has a bit of "mini-collegetown" feel to it.

The school police send out emails of about crimes and alerts.
Mostly involving:
>Snatch and runs of smart phones, mostly off campus. On the lightrail, on buses. Maybe walking to school etc.
>The occasional robbery, physical attack << I remember getting only about 3-5 emails of those types so far.
>On campus people are sometimes too trustworthy and leave their belongings unattended so we get a few advisory and reminder emails about that sort of thing..
>The occasional crackhead "drifts up" from Lexington Market. Can be verbally abusive. They rarely make it to close to campus. The one time they have they are normally gone after 10-15 minutes.

Not really different from any other college. Surprisingly seems safer then a few other colleges in the city.
School police does an awesome job. They routinely patrol around the school in their cars. They offer rides, there is a shuttle to various to different apartment complexes, and the State Center Metro subway.

It's really being aware of your surroundings, using commonsense. If your daughter does that she should be okay.

Had no trouble at all during my four yrs. there. Of course, this was 1962-6. Today I wouldn't go near there unless accompanied by a platoon of US Army Rangers.

You're quite the drama queen. I've never felt unsafe in that part of the city.

Actually, I'm not any kind of a queen, but at age 69 I may have deteriorated into a coward, because I even get antsy when going to St. Joe's hospital or GBMC in the upper Chas. St. area. Also, I remember a different Balto. vis-a-vis the zoo that the reporters describe on the local news.

No offense, but I would turn off the TV and actually get out and see what the city is like these days before you disparage it based on experiences from several decades ago. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.

Everyone has their own comfort zone but being afraid of GBMC is laughable considering it's surrounded by some of the most affluent neighborhoods in the Baltimore metropolitan region.

Over the years I've met a few people who expressed fear of Baltimore but their tone implied a pride of being afraid of the city rather than genuine fear. They habitually refused to venture within the city borders out of this so called fear but it was obvious (to me) that the refusal was due to being afraid of having a long held mindset challenged.

No one is going to force you to move back into the city or visit the city against your will but if you want to see your childhood neighborhood to relive old memories this attitude that you would need a guarded escort is silly and says more about your mindset than the reality on the ground. It's entirely up to you to deprive yourself of a long standing desire to revisit Belair Edison. It's only your loss if you don't.
