At best Oprah says I didn't think I could be fulfilled if I stayed in Baltimore—it would have caused me to settle into a conditioned life. I wanted to be more than comfortable." In conclusion there was no reason for her leaving because she felt threatened or was a victim of the crabs in a barrel syndrome. She actually left because it was too stable, and routine. She got bored with the conditioned and comfortable life offered in Baltimore that she left because she wanted to be challenged.

I'm in my mid-twenties and will probably be moving to Baltimore shortly. It's mostly to be in a sort of 'high orbit' around DC though.

Most of my friends did a stint in Baltimore to try and "find their dream" after college. I made it as close as Towson. I was gone in a year. My friend that lasted the longest stayed about 6 years, then left.

The reasons were pretty much the same from all of them............they didn't like living in Baltimore. The city has its selling points, don't get me wrong. But city life, especially in Baltimore, seems to be an acquired taste that some people never come around too. Sort of like an IPA, once the thrill of drinking expensive hoppy brew wears off, you have to decide whether or not you actually like the odd bitter taste.

Try mentioning that on the Pittsburgh forum and your head will be ripped off and your posts deleted. Pgh has come along way but it only recently put a "Band Aid" on the problem of fleeing youth, particularly college grads and young professionals. I've argued that Pgh is very average and mediocre for a young professional, which is better than terrible like it once was. I think Baltimore may have the problem of being overshadowed by DC and even Philly when it comes to attracting youth. Any thoughts on that?

Btw-- I'm a young professional trying to get out of Pgh and considered Baltimore for relocation.

Yup she was being broadcast across some parts of the country. They wanted her to stay.

So the posters on the Pittsburgh forum have a problem facing reality, eh? That is easy to relate to as we have the same problem here on the Baltimore forum.

Youth are going to go where there is opportunity for them in their chosen fields. The bigger the city, the more opportunities, so yes, larger metro areas such as DC and Philly are able to attract more young people than metro areas such as Baltimore and Pittsburgh that are not as large and have less opportunity. Considering all that it offers, Baltimore does have a reasonable cost of living, at least when compared to other East Coast metro areas.

Could you please tell us, why do you want out of Pittsburgh; what does it lack? Why are you looking toward Baltimore, and what do you expect to find here? Maybe we can give you some insight and help you make a sensible decision.

This is real conversation! I agree with her assessment and knowing that she is familiar with the terrain, its people and operation.
