I'm sure this question has been asked here quite a bit but I wanted to get the latest and greatest info. My family and I are moving from Georgia to Baltimore because of my job. We're originally from Boston so we will be doing some driving back to Beantown. What are some good northern Baltimore suburbs that are safe and has good schools? I have three boys (8, 2, and 9 mos old). I know some areas can get expensive but any info will be greatly appreciated.

Default Boston to Bmore

Moved Boston->Baltimore 5 years ago. Our kids are now about as old as yours. Folks will chime in with the regular recommendations. In the City, choices like Homeland, Mt. Washington, Roland Park - will come up. In the County (but close by) other choices will pop up too. Will come down to:

- desired length of commute
- schools
- home budget
- what kind of vibe you want

For us, we moved from metro Boston - same situation (3 kids); do manage to get up there fairly often as well and find living north of the city makes the drive fairly bearable.

PM me with specific questions about our experience.

We're moving to West Towson next month with our 3 kids (4, 2, 13 mos). We did lots of searching and considered Mt. Washington and Roland Park in Baltimore City; and Rodgers Forge, Towson, Lutherville, Stoneleigh, and Cockeysville in Baltimore County. There are several little neighborhoods that are really close together, but the better elementary schools in the County are Rodgers Forge, Riderwood, and West Towson from my understanding.

And of course, do your own due diligence: 2014 Maryland Report Card

You can read about every school there.

Keep in mind, the %age of students going to private school in the city and county is very, very high. Make sure you are looking at schools where they feed good middle and high schools or you'll be spending a fortune on private schools as well.

Search around 83 and 695 in Baltimore County and you'll likely find what you're looking for

Hunt Valley, Lutherville, Cockeysville are nice suburbs. Most important is make sure you are in aa good school district, because private school tuition in the area averages about $20,000. If you are looking at public schools, make sure they are solid all the way through high school, because there are a few districts where the primary schools are good and the middle and high schools are not great.
