Just the facts about Baltimore :

The sixth most violent city per capita in the US in 2013

Now the heroin capital

On a scale from1 to 200 with 1 being the least auto accidents and 200 being the worst, Baltimore ranked 193.

Teen birth rates are twice the number of DC and three times the number as the county as a whole.

The State's Attorneys Office is more concerned about political correctness than justice and refuses to pursue "hate Crimes" when it is appropriate.

A really good Mayor and Police Commissioner who work very hard to solve this city's problems.

Stop scaring people! They won't move here if you're throwing statistics up stating how bad it is. We are trying to move 10,000 families into the city.

I still don't know what a hate crime is??! If one destroys a life, isn't that hateful enough?

Seem to recall that a few yrs. ago, B'mo was #1 for syphilis, gonorrhea, and shock trauma evacuations for drug ODs.

Amen to that, but because hate crime provisions are on the books, the law should be applied equally not solely in favor of the "protected" demographic groups.

Who is this "really good mayor"? The long line of mayors who really worked to solve the city's problems ended with William Donald Schaeffer or possibly Thomas D'Alesandro. The mayors after Schaeffer have been nothing but human garbage.

Schaeffer's wasn't perfect, but his affable goofball demeanor was entertaining to say the least; his politics was slightly above average at best. He employed a few African Americans in key political positions in the city and created some individual Black wealth, and at the same time playing political games to keep Blacks from political power in Baltimore City during his term as Mayor. Read Derek Musgrove's Rumor, Repression and Racial Politics: How the Harassment of Black Elected Officials Shaped Post-Civil Rights America.

One thing I will say about Willie Don, he was the last Mayor of Baltimore who truly cared more about the City and its welfare than about his own image and political standing. The man loved Baltimore and worked very hard for it, no matter how mis-guided some of his ideas and projects may have been. I don't think we can say the same about his successors.
When Schaefer got behind a project or idea, he would see it through come hell or high water, and damn what it cost him.
Here's a favorite personal story about Hizzoner: Many years ago, after he was out of the Governor's office, one of the local MPT affiliates was having another of its seemingly endless pledge drives to raise funds for public TV broadcasting, and Schaefer was one of the local celebrities participating. As usual, he was hamming it up in his own inimitable way whenever he got any camera time, insulting his enemies and needling the media in general, including the MPT host who was interviewing him. At times like these I found him downright hilarious. After a break, the host returned with another plea for donations. I called up and promised I'd send them twenty bucks if they got the Governor to come back out and tell a joke. Sure enough, within minutes William Donald Schaefer was back in front of the camera regaling us with a (probably wholly made up) backhanded joke of which his arch enemy reporter "Plain Jayne" Miller was the butt.
The station got their twenty bucks from me.

Well let's see. Looks like he left the Mayor's office in 1987. Would that be about 27 years ago? One would think that these poor, deprived Black office seekers -- and the city that so longed for their leadership, I suppose -- must have recovered by now. After all, the Black mayors who took his place did such a great job . . .
