So it's that time of year again. The Census has just come out with their latest figures on Baltimore City's population. Here's how it looks:

2010
Non-Hispanic White: 174,639
Non-Hispanic Black: 393,764
Hispanic: 25,960
Asian: 14,608
2 or more Races: 11,544

TOTAL: 620,961

2014
Non-Hispanic White: 175,879
Non-Hispanic Black: 388,000
Hispanic: 29,448
Asian: 16,459
2 or more Races: 12,580

TOTAL 622,793

Change between 2010 and 2014
Non-Hispanic White: 1,240
Non-Hispanic Black: (5,764)
Hispanic: 3,488
Asian: 1,851
2 or more Races: 1,036

TOTAL: 1,832

Source: https://www.census.gov/popest/data/c...4/PEPSR6H.html

*Note: the sum of each column will not equal the "TOTAL" shown. This is due to the exclusion of both the Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander and Native American categories (I decided to just focus on the major demographic groups).

TAKE AWAY: The city's population was essentially stagnant (we've been hoovering between 619,000 and 623,000 since 2005), which is actually an improvement over previous decades where we experienced regular annual losses (as a point of reference during the Schmoke administration we lost close to 10K people a year). The Black population continues to be the only major demographic group with a declining population. The combined growth in the non Hispanic white, Hispanic, and Asian populations is slightly larger than the amount of decline in the black population. Overall the city is steadily becoming more diverse.

If this rate continues (a straight linear projection) the demographics for 2020 will be as follows:

2020 Projection
Non-Hispanic White: 177,739
Non-Hispanic Black: 379,354
Hispanic: 34,680
Asian: 19,237
2 or more Races: 14,134

TOTAL: 625,541

So blacks are leaving the city either for the County or leaving the State entirely? I also read some time ago that the City is losing some of its poor as they too leave the City for presumably better opportunities elsewhere.

If you find one of those maps that shows what areas of the City lost populations vs gained.. I would love to see it. I would venture to guess anything around the harbor (south and southeast) or downtown gained .....west, east, and northwest Baltimore declined and North, Northeast likely remained stagnant/stable. I love NE Baltimore.. but fear that it will suffer the same fate as NW Baltimore overtime in some sections....

*I thought the mainstream Western scientific community declared that there is only 1 "race", one species of humankind;thus, evolving into many varying ethnicities??!!

Someone has been lying!

And what fate has Northwest Baltimore befallen to?!! And, you are right and exact concerning the stagnant environment in NE Baltimore. I live in the Waverly/Govan neighborhoods and it's boring as s*&^^&t over here. Northwest Baltimore, from an African American/Black cultural vantage, it's waaay better. If it wasn't for Belvedere Square, Towson, Goucher, JHU, Charles Village this area wouldn't be jack s&t.

I've said this in very similar thread you posted last year:

Those difference calculations you posted are not useful without an associated sample error for the 2014 numbers, which are from a random sample and not an actual census like the 2010 numbers.

Codification - Blacks are leaving Baltimore and it's the right time to move back in.

Well, what's the margin of error?

I guess it depends on what one considers as NW Baltimore. From my understanding Greenspring Ave west and everything north of Mondawmin along Liberty Heights and Reisterstown Rd is considered NW Baltimore.. basically everything NW of Druid Hill Park. So within that you have Park Heights/Pimlico, parts of the "Arlingtons", Calloway-Garrison, and sections of Gwynn Oak and Forrest Park that have not faired well in terms of deterioration of housing stock, liquor store challenges and crime. That said.. there are still some very solid communities in NW such as Ashburton, Howard Park, Fairmount, Windsor Hills, and Hanlon to name a few. The later neighborhoods are being "refilled" with young middle income African American families so they are stabilizing or going through their own "rejuvenation" so to speak. Ashburton is now a local Historic District which should help stabilize the neighborhood by regulating exterior repairs/improvements which could enhance property values by saving the housing stock.

I wouldn't be so down on Waverly...it has a lot of promise and from a retail district perspective it is doing fairly well considering the state of some of the neighborhood retail districts in Baltimore. I noticed that there was even a fund raiser by one of the local organizations at Melbas which brought out a fairly diverse crowd considering Melbas has long been an restaurant/club frequented predominately by African Americans. I wish they would consider opening during the day and becoming a restaurant by day.. lounge/club by night. Their food is delicious and could go a long way at "branding" Waverly in terms of soul food and the like...and become part of the reason why people would come to the area. To me, Soul Food and music other than Baltimore 'club music' is not played up enough given the City's history and demographics.. People seem to associated it with being in the "hood" or in "the cut" but Melbas could go a long way to changing that perception.. though there may be the whole healthly eating thing that may give some pause....but they could have other options on the menu...
