No crime. Right? TPTB did not want him to be commissioner
so they picked lint out of gnat droppings to find a violation.
Duh

He "willfully failed to file a federal return for tax years 2013, 2014, and 2015, despite having been a salaried employee of the Baltimore Police Department in each of those years," according to the news release.

De Sousa faces up to a year in prison and a $25,000 for each of the three counts.

The police commissioner said in a statement shortly after that he "fully" admits to failing to file those taxes, but he did file his 2016 taxes and got an extension for the 2017 taxes.

And what happens if he does not owe? Answer that question.
I knew someone who did not file for five years. No threats from
the Feds. No indictments. A lowly office worker just told the person
to file ASAP. It is political. Are you blind to that fact?

Not much defending going on in this thread, and I don’t see a single instance where anyone has identified to a single political party...

Well he didn't last long... I don't understand how our city government thinks and operates. Why is it so hard for us to attract qualified candidates?

My grandfather told me once that any politician that can fix Baltimore City will become the next President of the U.S

Do you think that someone just wanted him out..so that someone else can get the job or to embarrass the Mayor? It is odd that it has come to this.. most people can just pick up the phone or go online and make a deposit and get on a payment plan... case closed...Owing back taxes (but being on payment plan) is much better than not filing taxes at all (and owing) . There is lot of chatter that this is just a gateway charge into other more diabolical crimes that he and others in the BPD have committed and that someone from the indicted cadre of officers from the Gun Task Force has turned into a canary.. but I will let the case play out and we shall see.

Ok, I will. If one does not owe taxes there is no compulsion, legal or statutory, to file. Although, if you don't and are owed a refund you won't get it.

The only time what happened to De Souza happens is when taxes are owed. That then becomes a case of tax evasion.

The democrats always want to raise your taxes, but never pay their own.
You can bet most of the democrat senators, congress members, etc are not paying
their taxes. This is just the latest example.

Prior to Kurt Schmoke, Baltimore mayors were mostly egotistical,
backroom political-machine men. They were the lion tamers to a
beast (Baltimore) that could be tempered but never tamed.
The mayoral powers were initially designed for a port city and
expanded as residency increased. Mayoral powers have really
not been greatly modified since Schmoke, making whoever can
properly use them very powerful.

Speaking of Baltimore mayors, what ever happened to that black woman with the Saks 5th Ave., hair dos and fancy dresses?
