I am moving to Baltimore in September for work and have no idea where to live. I will be working in Abingdon, but do not necessarily want to live there.

I am single and in my low 30s and want to live in an area where there are pubs, shops and things to do preferably within walking distance. I will know no one so any place that is busy with activity would be a plus. I will probably rent with a $1000 max per month.

Any suggestions out there? I hear Fells Point and Towson are nice, but I'm not sure if those areas fit what I'm looking for.

Any help would be appreciated.

Baltimore City would offer what you are looking for. Doing some searches or reading through the sticky that is posted at the top of the Baltimore forum will provide you with a lot of information.

To start, I'd suggest Canton, because it offers easy access to I-95 for your commute, and there are plenty of things to do within walking distance. It is expensive, though you could probably find a rowhouse to share with someone.

White Marsh (a suburb) has a mall and The Avenue, but I'm not sure how much (if any) housing is located within walking distance.

Welcome and good luck.

Both Fells Point and Towson will probably offer what you are looking for. You should also check out Mount Vernon and Charles Village.

thanks to both of you. Those suggestions look good.

What is a row house?

You might like Hampden, too. Or a host of other places depending on where you feel comfortable. I suggest you drive around and walk around a bit in the areas to see if you will really like them. In some areas the apartments may not be advertised online, and you might find a place that you would like to rent. There is a neighborhood in Baltimore for you. A small list of places that are safe (for a city), clean and close to things is:
Barclay
Bolton Hill
Canton
Charles North
Charles Village
Downtown
Fells Point
Federal Hill
Greenspring
Guilford
Homeland
The Inner Harbor
Lauraville
Loyola/Notre Dame
Mount Vernon
Mount Washington
Ridgeleys Delight

I just did a search and I realized that there's no good neighborhood map that shows all the areas! ~ Maybe I will try to start on one in my spare time. The best I could find is this one from LiveBaltimore: Live in Baltimore - Neighborhood Map

I recommend you visit these areas during the day and at night.
