I've been reading all thse threads questioning the safety of the Mondawmin area and I thought I hadn't really heard of much going on there in awhile, however, another area which should be a very nice upper middle class area has been having a huge wave in crime: Arundel Mills Mall in Anne Arundel County.

I found out there were 2 more robberies on Tuesday along with a nearby bank robbery.
Two people robbed at Arundel Mills -- baltimoresun.com (http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/annearundel/bal-md.crimebriefs072may07,0,1560550.story - broken link)

Now this should be a "nice" community but despite more policing they have had dozens of robberies in that area since last fall.

Any ideas on why this area is seeing so much crime?

Oh---Lovely Anne Arundel County.... You couldn't pay me enough to live there. Parts of it have way more crime than parts of the city.

The Mall is the attraction and the problem.. With popular malls often come crime.. people looking to make a quick buck "smash and grab" something off a car seat or a mugging/purse snatching in the parking lot...Places like Owings Mills and other malls in decline probably have less crime (against patrons not necessarily less shoplifting) because less people go there. Not all teenagers/young adults commit crimes but often times where you have them in large numbers you may have more incidents.. and the teens are going to go the the "happening" places as opposed to a dead mall.

Crimeand traffic are probably the crux of the opposition to the slot parlor that is being proposed.. many feel that both will increase substantially...

I've personally witnessed a mugging at the mall, and a co-worker as seen more than one himself. I think the fast easy access to more than one highway makes it attractive to criminals.
