We may be moving to the Baltimore area from Boston this summer - need to be living within easy commuting distance to John's Hopkins main campus (< 20 min). Considering houses in North Baltimore (Roland Park, Homeland) and nearby towns such as Ruxton, Lutherville/Timonium, Towson, etc. What would be the best catholic elementary schools in these areas? I have 5 year old and 8 year old. Thanks!

Alas Catholic Education in Baltimore (in some areas) is going the way of the dodo bird. Shrine of the Sacred Heart was a nice little School in Mt. Washington.. but it is closing this year.. That will leave you with St Thomas in Hampden and St Pius X in Towson/York Road.

Check out this site for more info Welcome to the Archdiocese of Baltimore

Close to Homeland (walking distance) is Cathedral School; St. Pius X is about a 5-10 minute drive up York towards Towson. I also heard that Assumption School (edge of Homeland, on York) is reopening next year, but not sure in what incarnation. Relo'd to Baltimore/Homeland from Boston myself last year. Welcome.

I'm a graduate of a catholic school in baltimore cardinal gibbons!! It was an excellent school but i think its being closed and merged with another!!! But the best option for you is the gilman school, its on northern parkway not too far from ruxton and roland park!! Also its considered to be one of the best schools in the country!!! Also check boys latin & st. Pauls. And when it comes time for that 8 yr old to hit 6th grade don't be too afraid to shy away from roland park, its a public school on northern parkway n roland rd. Its the best middle school in the city, children have to do very well on their standardized test to get in. And its a very diverse school black and white!! Very prominent students!!

One answer: Cathedral. The most prestigious of the parochial schools in the region. Feeds most of its students into Loyola and Notre Dame Prep. St Pius is also a good choice. In towson is Good Counsel. But if you want to be in Roland Park, Cathedral is your best choice.

I know the diocese is hiring a new superintendent and has a plan to close and merge many schools, so I would check the plans when you narrow down your choices with the diocese.

Best of luck

Check out the test scores, tuition, and other relevant information for each Catholic school in the Archdiocese at www.archbalt.org. The schools released testing data a few months ago and students tested among the top third nationally, with many in the areas you are interested in testing in the high 80th and 90th pecentiles. Cathedral, Immaculate Conception, St. Pius X-which just announced a montessori program are a few in the areas you mention.

Default Cathedral

Our daughter just finished 2nd grade at Cathedral - we are very happy with it - unfortunately we're moving out of state. I'll tell you that they're always full though, so get your name in. (and join the parish!) I live in Homeland - you could also try St. Pius X. I have two neighbors who send their kids there and are happy with it. With the recent Catholic school closings in Baltimore, they seem to be investing in Pius as they're starting a Montessori program there for preschool and preK in 2011-12. Not that you'll use that, but it's a promising sign for that school.
