I'm not in Maine yet but I'm from the south - cajun country - and remember when I first moved out to Arizona, it was culture shock for sure. A guy I'd started seeing back then would call and after our chat, he'd wrap it up and just hang up. I always got a complex thinking he was mad at me or something because he didn't say "bye" and officially end the call. He'd just go, "all righty...click" I began to notice most people never said "bye" or "talk later, see ya" or officially end the call and for a long time I thought it was rude as all get out. EVERYBODY says bye when they're done talking.

Then I got to paying attention more watching movies and noticed that even characters ending a call just hang up without a proper "bye"...

So when I move to Maine here in another few months and speak to someone on the phone, are yall gonna say bye or just hang up and think nothing of it?

Because of caller id, I usually don't even pick up...

My experience with Maine is, it depends on the region you are in. I think there are three Maines and your experience will vary from region to region.

I am, originally, from the armpit of Connecticut, New London County. Right there are the most unfriendly, cut throat, and some of the most bigoted people you can meet.

So where's the part with all the friendly welcoming Maine people? Because I think I speak for all us newcomers, those are the ones we'd all prefer to meet upon arrival or shortly thereafter!

Often, in the local paper, there will be a picture of some fellow with the caption, 'if you see this man stealing something off your lawn, wish him a happy birthday.'

Come to the MDI / Acadia area and you will meet some. We are a friendly bunch most of the time!

I'm a native, so I haven't had this experience. It just seems normal to me, not unfriendly. Sometimes people from away can seem over-familiar and abrasive. I have to remind myself that my friend from the Midwest is just trying to be friendly, not invasive. It was really strange when I was traveling through the Midwest a few years ago and found that I was to their cashiers the way NY/Boston people are to our cashiers i.e. abrupt and inadvertently coming off as rude.

I have had many out of state friends comment that they have had a really hard time making friends, so you are definitely not alone.
