I don't know how many of you might know of the columnist Sarah Smiley. She's a lifelong Navy dependent, having grown up the daughter of an F-14 pilot and then married Dustin, who is a Navy flight instructor. Of course, she's moved around a lot in her life, but she never lived in the north----until now. Her husband was moved in the fall of last year to Bangor.

Smiley's column appears weekly in the Bath/Brunswick Times Record. When she said she was moving to Maine and was nervous about it, and her mother was appalled that she was going to live among yankees, I figured I'd be reading a lot of complaints about the weather, unfriendly northerners, etc. Just the opposite, though. She just loves it here and is publishing rave reviews of Bangor and especially our natural beauty and friendly neighbors. This week's column is especially complimentary:

It's nice to know Maine, and Bangor in particular, are getting some good press in papers throughout the country. (Mostly just papers in naval base areas, but it's all still good.)

Glad to see it finally trickled down to the Times Record. Sarah's article was in the weekend edition of the BDN and I posted the link on these pages then. Bangor is booming with four new hotels, a new Super WalMart, new Home Depot and they are going to build a Lowes.

Never heard of her, before now.

From my short exposure to Navy life [1976 - 2001] and moving around constantly; I also really like Maine.

As I may have expressed once before on CD; Mainers may not feel 'happy' about living here, but as coming from perspective of having lived in many places, and having owned many homes, folks from away often find a 'Jewel' when they move to Maine.
