I would love to see this 2 guys back in blue next year. Prob won't happen, but it's a possibility. An of course, as the Dodgers always do, let them get away.
The Dodgers weren't the only organization that undervalued Werth, he also belonged to Baltimore and Toronto but was dealt in minor trades.
He was just sort of a bust as a 1st round pick, not doing too well in many minor league seasons. Looking at his batting performance, nothing indicates he would turn into the type of major league player that he became, so I wouldn't be too tough on the Dodgers for overlooking him at all.
I know Baseball America had him on their Top 100 Prospects Listing a few times, but his performance never really matched the hope associated with his clean swing and big body.
Werth had a bit of a breakout season in 2004
.262 16 HR, 115 OPS+ in 326 at bats.
In 2005 he had some wrist injuries and only hit
.234 7HR, 89 OPS+
His wrist injury was so bad that he missed the entire 2006 season. There was no reason for LA to offer him arbitration.
I seem to recall (not gonna look it up) that the Dodgers had a ton of OFers at that time.
Ok, I looked. In 2006 the following players logged time in LA's outfield
Andre Either
Matt Kemp
Kenny Lofton
JD Drew
Jose Cruz
Jason Repko
Rickey Ledee
Delwyn Young
and...
Cody Ross
There was no room for a very questionable Werth among a bunch of talented players
