Eligible for arbitration for the first time, Clayton Kershaw submitted a $10 million figure while the Dodgers submitted $6.5 million.

The record for 1st year arbitration settlement is $4.5 million

Kershaw's request more than doubles that, the Dodger offer is about 50% higher than that.

Kershaw's request is equal to the $10 million that Tim Lincecum received from the Giants in his first year eligible for arbitration.

That is why Kershaw and his agent selected the ten million dollar figure. They now have to establish that Kershaw's performance to date is equal to what Lincecum had done going into his first year of arbitration eligibility. The Dodgers position will have to be that Lincecum did more.

I hope this doesn't go all the way to arbitration. A multi-year contract would be nice.

Agreed.

Though, I might question the wisdom of signing two guys to long-term deals immediately following a Cy Young award and near MVP.
