Jays made the best of four hits, with three of them leaving the yard. I was very impressed with Sox starter Lopez. He threw 97, free and easy, with movement. He's a keeper.
I really like what I'm seeing from the Jays' pen - from their pitching overall. It was considered to be their strength this season, and might perhaps compensate for the lack of offense that plagued them last year.
Yangervis Solarte has become an instant fan favourite. His enthusiasm is contagious and reminiscent of the late, great Munenori Kawasaki.
And even though it's only 3-2, it's the first time since 2016 the Jays are over .500. I'll tip a glass to that.
Some unexpected - but welcome - boom in the bats led Toronto's whuppin'. Aledmys Diaz had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Donaldson looks like his stroke - and his throwing arm - are back in form.
Aaron Sanchez will start tonight against Carson Fullmer in the final of the three-game set.
Trout mentioned the highlights already, but here's the recap:
White Sox got the first run of the game in the second on a Nicky Delmonico single. Jays would take the lead for good when Aledmys Diaz would homer in the 3rd to put the Jays up 2-1, and they would add a 3rd run in the inning on an error by Tim Anderson. Anderson would get his error back in the top of the 4th with an opposite field homer to cut the Jays lead to 1. Jays would add 3 more runs in the bottom half, Diaz doubling home Kevin Pillar, and then Josh Donaldson 2 run homer. White Sox would not go quietly as they got an Avasail Garcia homer in the 5th, and an Adam Engel RBI groundout in the 6th to cut the Jays lead back to 6-4. Donaldson would drive Diaz in with an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th to make it 7-4, before Yolmer Sanchez homered to CF for the Sox to cut it to two again, this time at 7-5. Jays would finally put the pesky White Sox away in the bottom of the 8th with a 7 run outburst. After Luke Maile flied out to begin the inning, the next 5 Jays would reach base: Gift Ngoepe walk, Curtis Granderson RBI double, Donaldson walk, Justin Smoak RBI ground rule double, and an intentional walk to Yangervis Solarte. A Randal Grichuck sac fly made it 10-5, but then Kendrys Morales singled, Pillar had a double, and then Luke Maile finished the scoring on the night with a 2 RBI double. Every Jays player that stepped to the plate that inning either had a run scored or an RBI. J.A. Happ (1-1) allowed 4 runs on 7 hits (2 homers) with 1 walk and 9 strikeouts in 5.1, Danny Barnes (1st hold), John Axford (1st hold), and Tyler Clippard (1st hold) allowed 1 run on 2 hits (1 homer) with 1 walk and 3 strike outs in a combined 2.2 innings of relief. Miguel Gonzalez (0-1) got pounded for 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits (2 homers) with 2 walks and 4 strike outs in 5 innings.
The final game of the series takes place Wednesday evening. Aaron Sanchez (0-1, 6.35) starts for the Jays against Carson Fulmer (3-1, 3.86 in 2017). Game time scheduled for 7:07.
Matt Davidson homered leading off the 2nd inning to put the White Sox up 1-0, but the Jays would tie it up in the 4th when Justin Smoak doubled and scored on Russell Martin’s ground out. Yoan Moncada would have a bases loaded single in the 5th to put the Sox up 2-1 and then Aaron Sanchez would hit Avasail Garcia to put the Sox up 3-1. Steve Pearce and Kendrys Morales would each have singles in the 6th to tie the game at 3, but Jose Abreu would greet Ryan Tepera with a lead off homer in the 8th for the final margin of the game. Sanchez allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (1 homer) with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in 6 innings and Tepera (1-1) allowed 1 run on 1 hit (1 homer) with 0 walks and 0 strikeouts in 1 inning. Carson Fulmer allowed 3 runs on 5 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts in 5 innings, Nate Jones (1-0) had 1 strikeout in a hitless 1.1 for the win and Joakim Soria (2nd save) had 2 strikeouts in a hitless 9th. White Sox play their first home game of the year as the start a 3 game series against the Tigers on Thursday. Jays will have Thursday off and they will resume play on Friday in Arlington against the Rangers. Matt Moore (0-1, 9.00) started for the Rangers against Marco Estrada (0-0, 3.86). Game time was 8:05.

Marin had a 2 run single in the 3rd and Morales followed with a sac fly to put the Jays up 3-0. They’d add 3 more in the 4th on a Josh Donaldson which scored Devon Travis, a Smoak sac fly scoring Pearce, and a Martin single scoring Donaldson. Yangervis Solarte & Martin would have back-to-back homers in the 6th to make it an 8-0 game, and Shin-Soo Choo would homer in the bottom half of the 6th to get the Rangers on the board at 8-1. Rangers would finish with 4 runs in the 7th: Rougned Odor doubled leading off the inning and scored on Drew Robinson’s single, Robinson would score on a Choo double, who would score on an Elvis Andrus single, and finally Adrian Beltre would have an RBI double scoring Andrus. Moore (0-2) allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits with 4 walks and 1 strikeout in 3.1 innings. Estrada (1-0) allowed 1 run on 5 hits (1 homer) with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts in 6 innings, Tepara (2nd hold) had a hit allowed and a strikeout in a scoreless inning of work, and Roberto Osuna (3rd save) worked around 2 hits with a double play ball to lock down the save. Game 2 of the series takes place Saturday. Marcus Stroman (0-0, 7.20) starts for the Jays against Mike Minor (0-1, 3.86). Game time scheduled for 8:05.
Marcus Stroman started the 2nd inning with back-to-back walks, both runners moved up on a groundout by backup catcher Juan Centeno, and Ryan Rua had a sac fly to score the first run of the game for the Rangers. Kevin Pillar tripled with 1 out in the 5th to break up Mike Minor’s no hitter but Aledmys Diaz struck out and Randal Grichuck flied out to end the scoring threat. Rangers would break it open in the 5th. Just like the 2nd, Stroman started the inning issuing back-to-back walks to Shin-Soo Choo and Rougned Odor. He got Elvis Andrus to fly out, and with Nomar Mazara batting Stroman balked both runners up a base, but he ended up striking Mazara out so looked like he might come through unscathed. It was not meant to be however as Joey Gallo doubled home Choo & Odor, Jurickson Profar followed with an RBI double, and then Centeno followed with an RBI single. Steve Pearce had the lone Jays RBI of the day with a homer in the 6th, and nobody from either team advanced farther than first base the rest of the way. Stroman (0-1) was ineffective allowing 5 runs on 6 hits with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts in 4.2. Never good when you have more walks than strikeouts. And of course the only 2 innings the Rangers score in, the inning starts with back-to-back walks . Minor (1-1) allowed 1 run on 2 hits (1 homer) with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in 6 innings. Cole Hamels (1-1, 3.38) starts for the Rangers in the rubber match against Jaime Garcia (0-0, 1.50). Game time slated for 3:05.
Steve Pearce would hit the first pitch of the game from Cole Hamels for a home run as the Jays never trailed from the opening pitch. After a strikeout to Josh Donaldson, Hamels would allow singles to Justin Smoak and Yangervis Solarte before Kendrys Morales cleared the bases with a 3 run homer. Rangers would get 1 back in the bottom half on an Elvis Andrus RBI single. Kevin Pillar would get that run back with an infield single that hit off of Hamels in the 3rd, and after reaching on an error to lead off the 6th Pillar would score on Luke Maile’s double who would score on a single by Curtis Granderson to finish the Jays scoring on the afternoon. Joey Gallo would follow an Adrian Beltre double with a 2 run homer in the bottom half, and Shin-Soo Choo would have an RBI single for the last run of the game in the 8th. Jaime Garcia (1-0) allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (1 homer) with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts in 5.1, Ryan Tepera (3rd hold) allowed 1 run on 0 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in 1 inning, and Roberto Osuna (4th save) had 1 strikeout in 1.1 hitless innings. Hamels (1-2) allowed 7 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits (2 homers) with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts in 5.1. The road trip through all 3 AL divisions continues as the Jays head East to face off against the other divisional bird team, the Orioles, in Baltimore for a 3 game set beginning on Monday evening. Orioles, who had were on a 5 game losing streak after winning the opener rebounded well winning 3 out of 4 in New York against the Yankees including the last 2 wins in extra innings, so they will be riding high, plus this has turned into a pretty good rivalry lately so the Jays would have had to have been ready to play regardless of whether the Orioles won the series in New York, or got swept, going scoreless. J.A. Happ (1-1, 5.40) starts for the Jays against Dylan Bundy (0-0, 0.69) the scheduled starter for the Birds. First pitch from the Charm City scheduled for 7:05.
Curtis Granderson walked to begin the 3rd inning, Dylan Bundy would get Josh Donaldson & Justin Smoak to strike out but Steve Pearce put the Jays on the board with a 2 run homer, but Manny Machado would open the bottom half with a solo home run to cut the Jays lead to 2-1. J.A. Happ loaded the bases in the 5th but got Adam Jones to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to end that threat with Jones getting called out for running out of the baseline. Blue Jays would load the bases with 0 outs in the 8th on 2 singles and a walk, but Smoak would fly into a double play when Aledmys Diaz got thrown out at home trying to score on a sac fly and then Pearce flied out. Yangervis Solarte started the 9th with a walk, Russell Martin struck out and Kevin Pillar would follow with a single and Devon Travis got hit by a pitch to load the bases for the 2nd straight inning. After Diaz popped up to the catcher it looked like the Jays might get shut out of another bases loaded opportunity, but that was not meant to be. Granderson walked on 5 pitches to bring in a big insurance run and Donaldson would put the game on ice with a grand slam. Happ (2-1) allowed 1 run on 5 hits (1 homer) with 3 walks and 9 strikeouts. Danny Barnes (2nd hold) and Ryan Tepera (4th hold) allowed 3 hits through 2 innings with 1 strikeout. Bundy (0-1) allowed 2 runs on 4 hits (1 homer) with 2 walks and 10 strikeouts in 7 innings. Game 2 of the series takes place Tuesday evening. Aaron Sanchez (0-1, 5.40) starts for the Jays against Andrew Cashner (1-1, 4.09) with game time scheduled for 7:05.
Justin Smoak walked with 1 out and Yangervis Solarte followed with a base hit to RF which Orioles RF Anthony Santander threw into the dugout to allow Smoak to score. After throwing 7 hitless innings, Aaron Sanchez would allow a leadoff double to Tim Beckham to begin the 8th which was followed up by a Santender single which put runners on the corner. Chace Sisco would double home the tying run and after Trey Mancini flied out to shallow center Manny Machado was intentionally walked to load the bases and Jonathan Schoop ended the threat with a double play ball. After surviving the 2nd & 3rd 0 out opportunity the Orioles had, as what usually happens the team scored in the next half inning as Curtis Granderson hit a 2 out homer off of Darren O’Day to give the Jays the win. Sanchez (1-1) allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 5 walks but only 4 strikeouts and Roberto Osuna (5th save) had a 1-2-3 9th for the save. Andrew Cashner pitched 7 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts. O’Day (0-1) allowed 1 run on 2 hits (1 homer) with 1 walk. The final game of the series takes place on Wednesday. Marco Estrada (1-0, 2.77) takes the ball while Kevin Gausman (0-1, 8.00) will look to avoid the sweep for the O’s. Game time scheduled for 7:05.

Yangervis Solarte had a single in the 5th to cut the O’s lead to 3-2, but the O’s would get the 2 run lead back on a Schoop single in the bottom half. Aledmys Diaz homered in the 6th, and Chace Sisco had a RBI single in the bottom half for the final scoring of the game. Marco Estrada (1-1) allowed 4 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts in 6 innings. Kevin Gausman (1-1) allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (1 homer) with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts in 6 innings. Richard Bleier (2nd hold) and Darren O’Day (3rd hold) had 2 hitless innings with 2 strikeouts while Brad Brach (3rd save) allowed 1 hit in the 9th closing it out for the injured Zach Britton. Both teams have Thursday off. Orioles head to Boston to play a wrap-around 4 game series with the series culminating in the annual 11 AM Patriots game on Monday. Jays continue their 3 city, 3 division road trip with 3 games in Cleveland. Mike Clevinger (1-0, 0.71) starts for Cleveland while Marcus Stroman (0-1, 8.38) starts for the Jays, first pitch going at 7:10 Friday.
