I disagree with this. Until interleague play, the teams and their respective fans could basically ignore each other. The rivalry is a contrived one at best because there's usually little at stake except bragging rights. In fact I find this relatively new (not 100-year-old) rivalry to be far more annoying than special.
There has always been a Cub-Sox rivalry between fans. Obviously between the teams it was not the same.

There wasn't a serious rivalry between the team's fans until interleague play started. Now it's an annual contest to see whose fans can out-douchebag the other team's fans.
I'll go with Boston. These people are crazy passionate and knowledgeable, particularly about their Red Sox baseball. It does get really irritating to see New England sports fans ignore the other three pro teams and spend days discussing the potential impact of Boof Bonser.
I always liked Boof Bonser ( as did many Twins fans)
How often does a roster have a guy named------Boof ?
A Minneapolis newspaper columnist did an article about Boof Bonser and came to the conclusion if his first name had been Joe, fans would have " booed" him back to the minor leagues.
I think to truly be considered a great baseball town you need to have 3 qualifications.
1. Attendance
2. Knowledge of game
3. Knowledge of team history and baseball history
I don't think you need to be a winning team to be a great baseball town IE: CUBS.
