Why a 163rd game?

I don't understand why the division wasn't awarded to the Twins based on their head-to-head record in the regular season; or if they prefer a one-game playoff, why not at least grant home field advantage to the team that won the season series? IMO when the division is up for grabs, the team that dominated in head-to-head play should earn at least some advantage by virtue of that domination, whether it be outright awarding them the division (which I think is what happens if the other team would get the wildcard spot anyway) or give home field advantage for the elimination game to the team that won the season series.

OK, let me restate. Some of these teams play each other 18 times in a season, like the way the Twins and White Sox did through 162 games. So I guess that result is meaningless if they wind up being tied?
