Better be closer to the latter; they're already at about 18k per.
that's averages swayed by weekend crowds, promotions, good drawing teams, etc
on any given weeknight they are around 14k - that's the # I expect to jump up to the 20k-25k range while still getting the larger crowds on weekends and promotions - overall average will jump in accordance
that's spoken about someone who has never spent much time in south florida during the summer
i don't think many would call it "nice weather"
do you think attendance in houston or phoenix would change a bit if you exposed everyone to the summer elements
also, why did the brewers build a retractable roof stadium - after all it's summer in the upper midwest - it's nice there - if it's cool in the spring just wear a jacket, if it's cool in the fall it doesn't matter because the brewers don't play meaningful baseball at that time of year anyway
the average temps run close to 90 all through baseball season and over the course of the season on average they will get 41.29" of rain
as a comparison milwaukee comes in at 21.31" of rain over the season - so about 1/2 the amount
so yeah, on a a random tuesday night it's a tough sell to drive an hour after a day of work, settle into a football stadium with crap sightlines and environment, sit in the heat for an hour, then get rained on and maybe have a rain delay, then spend the rest of the night damp because of the humidity
that will pull really only the diehard fans
it was like the cardinals out here - they had their core 20k that would show up to every game, but as soon as they built a nice new stadium that kept fans off metal bleachers in 105 degree heat people started showing up in much larger #s
LOL, I'd say you schooled him pretty good, all good points F.L..

You're probably correct. In one Marlins/Braves broadcast this year you could hear talk from the Florida dugout....after a 9th inning homer by the Marlins! I had never heard a stadium so quiet after a walkoff. I'm sure the management would love it if they averaged over 30k in the new stadium.
yeah, with the accoustics of the football stadium and not a ton of ambient crowd noise you can really hear anyone who wants to shout something at a player or onto the field
i listen to most of the games on the radio and it can be fairly funny listening to the crowd noises
How are those the worst? Because they're at the top for payroll? Take a look at the Phillies:
C Carlos Ruiz (homegrown)
1B Ryan Howard (homegrown
2B Chase Utley (homegrown)
SS Jimmy Rollins (homegrown)
=~$36,000,000 this year
SP Cole Hamels (homegrown)
SP J.A. Happ (homegrown)
SP/RP Brett Myers (homegrown)
CL Ryan Madson (homegrown)
=~$20,000,000
$36M+$20M=$56M
Our payroll is $112M. Half of our payroll is devoted to homegrown players, whom we reward.
None-homegrown:
OF Shane Victorino (Rule 5 Draft)
OF Jayson Werth (was a bench player before he came to the Phillies signed a 1 year $850,000 contract to come here)
OF Raul Ibanez (3 year $31.5M contract)
3B Pedro Feliz (2 years $8.5M)
SP Joe Blanton (traded from the A's where he was 5-12 with a 4.96 ERA)
SP Pedro Martinez (1 year $1M contract)
SP Cliff Lee (trade)
SP Jamie Moyer (trade)
RP/CL Brad Lidge (trade)
Our highest paid free agents are Ibanez and Feliz, both of which were not anywhere near the highest paid free agents. Out of all of our trades, Brad Lidge is the only one making top money. Cliff Lee is making $6M this year.
I'd love to see your rationale for lumping us in with teams like the Yankees, Mets, and Cubs, who annually overpay for free agents.
The Phillies are run the right way, and it's paying off.
I agree with you, and I am not the one you are waiting to respond, but the payroll is still in the upper echelon of MLB teams and it IS easier for teams like the Phils to reward their homegrown talent. Yankees have a lot of home grown talent as well, they just happen to have some monster free agents to go along with it. You think teams like the Royals don't reward their players because they don't want to? Does that somehow make them "wrong" and the Phils "right?"

Is it our fault that David Glass is a cheapass? The guy is worth like $800 million, which is probably more than our ownership group is worth COMBINED. It's just as easy for David Glass to reward his players than it is for our owners.

Its not anyones fault, but can you see why the Phils more closely resemble the Yankees than a team like the Royals? Hold onto your good players, and plug in free agents into holes, whats so bad about that? I really don't understand what you are getting so hot about it.

"and it IS easier for teams like the Phils to reward their homegrown talent."
That's what annoys me. Yes, Philly is a more major market, but a lot of these owners, most notably Glass, Pohlad, etc. could raise their payrolls significantly if they cared about winning. The difference is that we've built our team around homegrown talent and less heralded free agent signings. We do not resemble teams like the Yankees, who go out there year after year and sign the top free agents and international players for absurd above market prices.
