Try to keep in mind several factors: athleticism, post d/rim protection/defense, post skills, midrange shooting, outside shooting, perimeter d, passing statistics, win/loss, championships/playoff success, contribution to team, dominance of his position/other players, dominance of the game and other things.
Two way threat (sorry Dirk) who's a presence in the lane on both ends, with excellent passing skills, rebounding and consistent scorer throughout a long, successful career. On the drama scale (which is important to me, Karl!) he scores very low, and blends well with teammates in different eras with different skill sets.
To me, this is extremely difficult to rank several players because of styles, team sets and teammates, etc. That's why I went with a foundational guy.

I would put KG at the bottom of the top 5 even though he has won a championship, my top 4 guys were all leaders and led their teams to championships or several very successful seasons, but I never saw that leadership quality in KG. I loved Dennis Rodman but he had no offence and was a severe distraction for many of his team mates.

Nowitzki over KG? I don't know. KG was a way, way better all around player than Dirk. KG suffered from a lot of poorly constructed teams. Dirk won a lot of regular season games but struggled in the playoffs with the exception of two years. KG went to the Finals the same amount of times as Dirk and won one just like Dirk.
I'm going to stick to the past ~30-35 years because it's too hard to judge guys before that and I didn't get the chance to watch them extensively throughout their careers.

Really wanted to put Rasheed in there because he could have been top 5 all-time if he wanted to be, and I think he could easily outplay half the guys in the top 10 in a playoff series, but his career wasn't consistent enough.
James Worthy was primarily a small forward, he probably shouldn't be on this list.
