BR neighborhoods w/ reasonable drive to the airport area

I have been searching all kinds of neighborhoods in Baton Rouge in the past few weeks looking for places to move myself. While I can't speak for home prices, I will definitely tell you areas in Baton that keep coffee shops, general shopping, safety etc... all in mind.

First, I would honestly say to try to look into the Garden District area. I know it may seem sketchy at some parts, but if you are in the heart of it, say near Perks Coffee on Perkins Rd. then you'll probably find something in your price range and very safe. I'll say that I'm quite unsure about pre-k for your children, however there are destined to be good pre-k throughout the city and I would imagine some near that area.

Another area you may look into is Southdowns. This is also near shopping (although no Target for a while) and quite safe and still very near to many things unique to Baton Rouge.

Next, try the "Bocage" area. You might think you'd be priced out of it, but I've found some surprisingly lower-priced rentals there that are still in a great area, so I would think you could find a house in that area also. The area I'm referring to generally runs near Jefferson Highway between Government St. and Interstate 12.

Now, as far as your commute, it will largely depend on the time of day you leave, but if you live in Southdowns, the Garden District or probably even Bocage, then you will make it in 25 minutes even with light traffic. I know that 99% of the time when you get onto the interstate at Government St. on 110, you can make it to the airport in 10 minutes or less depending on how you drive. Now, with heavy traffic, you'll probably still make it from the Garden District or Southdowns, because you can avoid the interstate and just hop onto it at I-110. From Bocage, you may have trouble, but like I said, it is very dependent upon the time of day you will be leaving/coming from that area. Our "rush hours" suck. But they are avoidable if you can time it right.

The Angola prison is in the same PARISH as St Francisville. It's also in a very remote corner (about 20 miles away) of the parish, and is surrounded on all sides by the Mississippi River and some hills and is pretty secure.

Besides, EVERY parish has a prison - not just West Feliciana (where St Francisville is).

Yeah, living in St. Francisville, I don't think you need to worry that much about Angola. Unless you're going to live up that road (LA 66 I think) up in the Tunica hills somewhere. I drive up there regularly to visit the hiking trails just across the border in MS.

Heck, I'd be more worried about that nuclear plant.

And even at the turnoff from LA 66 to go to Clark Creek, the prison is still miles away. So it's not even worth worrying about.

Angola = Don't worry. They are locked up nice and secure, hahaha. Supposedly, SUPPOSEDLY, it is actually safer to live near the prison. There is a town, which mainly is inhabited by employees of the maximum security correctional institute, and it's talked up as one of the safest places to live in the area due to the CONSTANT patrol.

But I wouldn't live there, just pointing out not to be scared of Angola. Live in St. Francisville.

Beautiful. Deep south. Gone with the Wind type of Moderator cut: inappropriate word = stuff . You'll love it. Plus, West Fel schools are great.

About 30 minutes to the airport. Maybe a little longer. Get a radar detector and 61 will be a breeze.

And (while all of us are telling you in different ways that the Angola Prison in West Feliciana Parish is nothing to worry about), the area NW of St Francisville is pretty remote - my cell phone reception enters a dead zone within several miles after turning off US 61 onto LA 66.
