Curious as to where folks are going that are fed up with Bend getting too crowded.

Idaho.

Thus say the stats.
2 friends from Sisters, OR moved to northern Idaho just to this summer.

(Crowds chased us from Colorado in the 1970's)

Sad spiral... Locals who built a nice community can no longer afford to live there due to taxes. With the exclusion of California, which has Prop 13.

Wyoming, Colorado, Montana were the first states to fall.

NZ would be a good choice, once they let us back in.
At least you could hope to get reasonable healthcare. (Bring $3m NZD)

Agreed, probably Idaho, but also perhaps Utah or Montana, or even eastern Washington. Property taxes can get a out of hand. I don’t think States like OR can maintain population with high taxes. Same, to a lessor extent in Washington or California. Idaho isn’t there yet, but may follow.

Idaho is a HIGH TAX state.

My taxes went down dramatically when I moved to Washington. If you have a good income, and a low consumption lifestyle Washington is a dream when it comes to taxes. You just have to put up with the fact that the Corporations own and run Washington state. But find your own little hiddy hole and life as a serf can be ok in Washington state.

I liked living is Idaho much better than Washington, except for the lousy weather in North Idaho. I can handle the weather in southern Idaho.

All these factors add up. Weather, taxes definitely play a part. Yes, WA has a high sales tax, but no income tax. Again for those not making major purchases it is a gold mine of a State.

I axed the idea of Washington 3 years ago and have been glad I did. The property taxes up there are outrageous and easily make up for no sales taxes. There are no free lunches. Just ask the homeless masses up there.

Washington has no income tax, there's plenty of sales tax.

Not for the WA southern border dwellers.

Property taxes can vary a lot... and you can usually buy a smart property if you know the taxing districts and borders. One of my homes is 1/2 the taxes of another (less than 1 minute apart and nearly the same valuation.)

One of my rural rentals has a $8.4 levy (per thousand). Another of my rental homes across the road is $14.7 / thousand.

Be sure to buy on the correct side of the road!

Hint: Know your tax assessor well!

The property tax in PDX suburbs on both sides of the border are ~1% plus or minus a negligible amount, based on lots of houses looked at while house hunting in Washington/Multnomah/Clackamas/Clark counties.

Well - OR is run by ignorant Social justice warriors, incompetent progressives from Portland and a cabal of of pot smokin old hippies. Corporations, for the most part, are run by folks who know money is not "free," but rather must be earned. I'd take the Corporate mindset any day.

OR seems like it's run by teenagers when compared to it's northern neighbor. For all Seattle's social silliness, I believe they still understand where the money comes from.
