I'm curious about Bend's local paper. It's got a history, according to Wikipedia, and was once considered a great example of small city journalism with big ambition. I'm wondering if this is still the case.

Is the paper any good? What's it's reputation around town? What's it missing? What's it good at? How has it changed over the years? How's it compare to Source? How is its coverage of county issues (outside of Bend the city)? What about the company that owns it, which is headquartered here (Western Communications) -- what role does it play in the community? Be as specific or as general as you'd like, I want to know as much detail as anybody is able to give.

Couldn't give you much detail - for a small circulation I think it does pretty well. Like others with small staff, they print a lot of material from the NY Times, AP stories, etc. Letters to the editor tend to be rather conservative and for the last year, mostly complaining about the new OSU campus. Monday issues are always rather thin. We've been subscribers for only two years, but would miss it if it were gone. It's the only paper that is delivered in the area. The Oregonian focuses mostly on Portland news and is not available by subscription.

I haven't taken the Bulletin for years. It's gotten rather skinny. However, it is a good source to learn what is going on in Bend. Bend is too small to make the news anywhere else (except when the kid in Prineville got Bubonic plague, which made the national news).

Just a reminder from our Terms of Service:

This is not the right place for consumer complaints. Such posts present defamation issues and they don't give the other side the opportunity to present their side of the argument.

So, with that in mind, feel free to comment but leave the consumer complaints out of the discussion.
