Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park - Closed Areas (U.S. National Park Service)

Parts of the park are still open. The activitiy will likely not have a direct impact on your travel plans except for restricting what you can do inside the park.

My good friend has lived in Kealekekua for over 13 yrs now. She just told me not to worry and that the park is usually closed down for precautionary measures and that the volcano is always active....its just a matter of the lava actually flowing. I am relieved now. I cant wait to visit that park and see this amazing part of nature!

Most of the National park is open, the park service is quick to close areas that are the least bit dangerous to avoid lawsuits, as visitors sometimes tend to do dumb, dangerous things and expect remuneration afterwards. Us folks that live locally are more worried that the eruption has ceased. (An erupting volcano is a happy volcano.)

Haleakala is still considered to be an active volcano.

Haleakala is of course on Maui, not the Big island, and it is not active, it is dormant (sleeping) which means it still COULD erupt, though I doubt if it ever would. It is like heaven to get up before sunrise, drive up and see the sun come up--well worth the trip.

Aloha

I stand, well sit anyways, corrected. I always thought Haleakala was still considered to be active, but not active as in "erupting". I know they do have quite a few seismic events up there, and it is considered to be overdue for a little "Pele fit", (probably shouldn't have said that, you definitely don't want to p##s off Madame Pele!!) And I know where it's located, can see it from my place, kind of hard to miss. Worked on the Los Alamos research lab up there years ago, working at slightly over 10,000 feet is quite an experience, and what a view!!!!!

Aloha and okolemaluna

Pardon my not knowing, but is the Los Alamos, the observatories? Everytime I go up there I am fascinated and as amazing as the crater is, I have always wanted to get into the observatory and check out the view at night. I can see the observatories from my parents house in Kihei and I always look up there at night and wonder what kind of things are being seen. I envy you!

I'm in Kihei as well, can see Science City on a clear day, with the sunlight reflectiing off the observatory domes. I don't know if they allow visitors in, when I was working up there, as a construction worker, not an astronomer, you had to get a pass and go through a gate to get in. Lots of top secret stuff goes on up there. Kind of funny, years ago the space shuttle had supposedly lost a few tiles off the belly of the craft, on it's pass over Haleakala the Oscar Observatory confirmed that no tiles were missing, story somehow made it's way into the Maui newspaper, and all heck broke loose up at Science City, people, I guess, weren't supposed to know how powerful those telescopes were!!!

Aloha and okolemaluna
