I will be on the Big Island for several months and while there, I hope to upgrade my beginner's uke to something a bit better. Would like to receive suggestions as to dependable vendors of ukes on the island. I bought my uke at Costco in Kona two years ago and it has certainly served me well.

Three that I have had good experiences with...

Hilo Guitars and Ukes, at 56 Ponaawai downtown near the park. Long time good business. They used to be a Kamaka dealer, now seem to concentrate on other nice high end lines. Taylor dealer. They also have uke lessons. Talk to Ken. Hilo Guitars and Ukuleles

Agasa Furniture and Music store next door makai... seriously. They have a very good stock of Kamaka and others, plus Takamine guitars, and they are negotiatiable on prices. Talk to Irene.

Just Ukes, in one of the shops around the Kona Inn on old Ali'i Street in Kona. Specialist.

I second Hilo Guitars and Ukes!

Went in there while I was on the Big Island back in August and everyone was really nice and they had a lot of really nice instruments and great brands for sale. They let me play one of their acoustic guitars as well, which was nice as I left mine at home and had to get that out of my system and play for a bit. Haha!

Otherwise, you could probably pick up a cheap Uke at a typical store that doesn't really specialize in them but sells them anyway.
