I just saw on a news show that Kilauea has erupted again. Didn't give any details, just some spectacular video. Anyone have current information? I'll be on the BI June and July and very much want to see active lave flows up close as possible (nothing dangerous though).

Kilauea has been erupting steadily since 1983. The latest events were somewhat spectacular and a little unexpected however they are far from any homes. The biggest "risk" we have from the volcano is the vog, not so much the danger of actually being overrun w/ lava. You can read up on the history of Kilauea at the Hawaii Volcanos website.

The best way to see the eruption is by helicopter. The part of the park where the new eruption is occurring is remote and closed off to the public. Don't expect the lava fountains you see on the news...that happens very rarely and is likely to subside soon.

With the cloud coverage last night looked like the sky was on fire

I live a couple of miles from the Jagger Museum, which is the prime outlook over the Halema'ma'u lava lake in the Kilauea Crater, where the lava was occasionally spurting in the air yesterday. It's also had several large rockfalls recently where large sections of the rim have fallen in, with splashes up to 80' in the air. Very unusual, no guarantees all this current activity will last. At night, when it's clear, from the Jagger overlook you can also see the glow at the Pu'u O'o crater far downslope. That's where the level in the lava lake suddenly dropped 300' the other day, like somebody pulling the plug on a bathtub, as the lava squirted out all along the East Rift zone. That area is remote and has no public access.

Due to the activity, Chain of Craters Road from Kilauea (at 4,000' altitude) down to the ocean is closed. For up to date info check Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park - Kilauea Volcano Status (U.S. National Park Service)

My favorite website for watching the volcano is the USGS one. They add pictures whenever there is significant activity, and they have access to all the eruption zones:

Current update of the eruption of Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i

There is also a page of maps, but it doesn't show the recent events yet. Click on maps at the top of the previous link.
