My girlfriend and I want to move to Hilo for school at U of H for marine science. I am just a little concerned about the job market. We have both been bar-tending for over 9 years each but are capable of doing any job in a restaurant or bar. I lived on Maui eight years ago for four years and had no problems and really enjoyed it but I do realize that there is alot less tourism in Hilo.
If I am going to school in Hilo is it reasonable to work in Kona?
We are just hoping to get some "REAL" answers thanks

It is a really long drive from Hilo to Kona. Use google earth and take a look.

No, it is not really reasonable to work in the Kona district if you live or learn in Hilo. There is a County bus which might work and it's at least free so I suppose you could study on the bus as long as the bus route worked for your schedule. However, it's gonna take about two or three hours to get to work and the same amount of time to get back each day. Driving a car won't work because of the cost of gas, not to mention the time involved as well. There isn't much time left over for school if you are spending all your time driving back and forth to the Kona side.

The Hele On bus only runs a few trips a day on any route, basically to serve workers going to daytime jobs and kids going to school.

While it is true that the Hele On bus only runs a few trips a day between Hilo and Kona, Hilo in-town (aka intra-Hilo) routes are numerous - every few minutes, depending upon where each bus is headed.
The bus terminal at Hilo Bay is a busy place.

There are also numerous routes all day long between Hilo and Pahoa and the subdivisions all the way.

Select a Schedule... — Hele-On Bus

One of the items in the mayor's new budget is raising the cost of the *free* bus rides, to $1 each way.

Get in touch with UHH, they have more jobs than students. I was thinking of becoming a student so I can get a job! Not kidding
