Those of you on the Big Island can get a free copy of the March-April 2014 Ke Ola magazine. Look at page 87; there's a nice article, complete with pictures, about Yurt Girl and her family.

I'm not affiliated with the magazine! I just enjoy reading it; they have beautiful pictures and interesting articles.

Hawaii is another planet. You can breathe the air and communicate with the natives, most of them anyway. But it is a place unto itself and totally unlike anyplace else on earth. I'm still trying to figure it out.

I wouldn't stress about the water catchment.

"In this case, with 10,000 gallons of stored water, a family
of four using 50–75 gallons of water per person per day
would have enough water for 35–40 days without rain."

I think that's a lot of consumption. If you use low flow washers, showers, and toilets, you would use less than half that, and if there are only two of you, you're talking 3-4 months worth of water, assuming that it never rains during that period. And if you run out, you can get water delivered. They aren't allowed to charge for the water, just the delivery, making the cost similar to buying county metered water. Plus, you can get free water at the spigots just a few miles from HPP.
A 700 square foot roof will harvest almost 55,000 gallons of water per year using conservative estimate of 125 inches of rain.

County water, without any water saving measures, runs about $35 - $40 a month. That's two people, one hot tub and three small gardens although we don't irrigate much since there's usually enough rain in our area. Dunno what water delivery runs nor how many gallons they bring when they deliver.

A friend gets a 4,000 gallon delivery from that place in Kurtistown behind the J Hara store, and it costs about $225 as I recall.

That's great information....so I would guess a 5000 gallon catchment tank would be sufficient?
