In Pahoa - Beaches - Hawaiian Shores - forget Verizon, unless at top then maybe. Road Runner DSL is what I use. Some days good some days bad. It is amazing the track phones from Walmart work in Kapaho but my verizon with data does not, and at the bottom of shores. DSL is the only connection I have found to be somewhat realible if available.

Can say in the weirdest spots remote in Hawi my phone and data does work.

For riding a motorcycle, you may want to stick fairly close to some sort of source of supply. You can't carry a whole lot on a motorcycle so you'll be doing more than weekly grocery runs.

Kapoho / Pahoa - not much highspeed (if any service)
Waimea - probably high speed internet but frequently cold and misty if a motorcycle was your only transport.
Honokaa - has Roadrunner and is sunnier than Waimea. Has most things you'd need in a small town - hardware store, grocery, small theater, etc. Waimea is easy enough to get to although Hilo is about forty miles away.
Hawi - dunno about high speed internet and if you need something not in Hawi/Kohala, it's a bit of a trek down off the top end of the island.

Considering how jam packed Kailua Oahu is these days, almost anywhere you'd pick to live on the Big Island would seem quiet and peaceful and have more room.
Thanks so much for the detailed reply. Very helpful! Starting to zero in on the Honoka'a area I think. Do you know if the Roadrunner service extends into the surrounding areas like Paauhau/Ahualoa/Kapulena/Kukuihaele?

I'm all over Craigslist but if you know anyone looking for a tenant let me know!

Mahalo!

Hopefully I'll remember to ask my neighbor about how far the roadrunner goes since he works for them, but probably quite aways, I'd expect. We had it in a little village in the middle of nowhere at our last house. If you are planning on renting, you can inquire of the prospective new landlord if the internet service is Roadrunner.

Finally got around to asking my neighbor and he says if the roadrunner service is there, the signal will be good. He works in a different area, though and can't say for certain which specific areas around Honokaa are covered. He thinks there are some areas in the back of Ahualoa which may not have service but he thinks all the other areas mentioned would.

I really appreciate that. That pretty much settles it for me, I'm totally focused on Honokaa and surrounding areas. Thanks again hotzcatz.

"I'm all over Craigslist but if you know anyone looking for a tenant let me know!"

Hi Disco, try padmappers.com as well - It spiders throughout the web for rentals. That's how we found our condo, and it was posted on two separate rental sites.

Daughter just used it to find her Burbank apartment, we're said "Honey, time to leave the nest! We'll be on a plane June 9th to Oahu. See ya." ; P
