What is the quality of drinking water in Hilo?

Do you drink from the tap or buy bottled drinking water?

Does it taste ok? i.e., not strong of chlorine, etc.

Thanks

There is a lot of information you might find helpful here: index

I have lived in Hilo and Kailua-Kona and I think the county tap water tastes fine.

Wasn't there that fellow in Hilo who was bottling and selling tap water? It tastes really good, no need for flat tasting water in plastic bottles.

And many of those plastic bottle will end up in that enormous floating garbage vortex off the northern Hawaiian Islands.

I have lived here since 12/28/11 (yes less than a week LOL) and the tap water here is great I used to buy though filtered water for $0.25 cents though back in CA. The water here tastes pretty good imo since I hear it comes from Mauna Kea.

That's only for the former plantation areas in Hilo (eg. Onomea and Hakalau). Most of the water for Hilo actually comes from the "Northeast Mauna Loa Aquifer Sector Area." Here's a link to a PDF that probably contains more information than most folks wish to know about Hilo's water...
http://www.hawaiidws.org/7%20the%20water/wateruseplan/HWUDP%20Chapter%20804_Final.pdf (broken link)

In any case, most of the tap water in Hilo is pretty good.

Living in Alaska, I can drink glacier water that was frozen before the industrial revolution. It tastes great!

The tap water in Hilo tastes great as well.
